omapl138 lcdk V4L2 problem

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAPL138, TVP5147M1, SYSBIOS, OMAP-L138, PMP, DA8XX

I am a new user for omapl138 lcdk, dont know much about linux. Recently i want to capture video with V4L2 driver and a pal camera, I use the following document to set my own project. But i can not find the video driver in the dev directory, i can find this driver by this command "cat /proc/devices". I find "81 video4linux", and i use the command " mknod video0 c 81 0" to create nod. The video0 can not be used."can not open......" is displayed. So i need some help to slove this problem. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Hui,

What is your camera part no?

Have you modified the your board file (pdata) for your camera hw?

Could you please attach your bootup logs?

  • (1) I am sorry, my english is not good, i can not understand the first question. I guess, what you want to know  is that a pal camera is connect to the compostite port and tvp5147m1 decoder. The camera is not ti UI board. The same connection in sysbios project can get a good result.
     (2) what is the board file(pdata) in linux? i am sorry, i am not familiar with linux.I don't know how to modify it. I just modify the menuconfig and bootargs according to the document.

  • Hi,

Your logs seems to be the VPIF driver doesn't loaded,

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Demonstration_of_VPIF_raw_capture_using_MT9T031_sensor_on_AM18X/DA850/OMAP-L138_running_Linux

Actually the TI wiki link which you attached one is that only for OMAPL LogiocPD EVM boards also which has support RAW camera & VPIF interface on UI boards.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/GSG:_Building_Software_Components_for_OMAP-L1#VPIF

As you said, In OMAPL138 LCDK will support VPIF on SYSBIOS (face detect etc.,)

Eventually, You need to enable the VPIF support in Linux .

  •  Hi, after setting the menuconfig again, the same error occurs.Could you help me to check the error. Thanks.

       1.set systemtype to vpif

      2.disable the fb

     3.select multimedia surport

    4. select video for linux

5 select v4l platform devices(video display, video capture, vpif driver)

    6 select tvp514x decoders

    7 set bootargs

  • I find that this is a common problem in e2e. Can anybody help?

  • Hi,

Have you checked your current bootup logs after changing those VPIF driver settings through menuconfig?

Are you able to see any logs related to VPIF?

Please attach your latest bootup logs after changing those VPIF driver settings through menuconfig?

Don't do text paste the logs?

From screen shot, I knew that the kernel version is linux3.3

What is your linux SDK are you using & how did you configure?

Have you enabled "TVP514x" support through menuconfig in decodes section?

  • Hi, thanks for your reply.my sdk is mcsdk_1_01_00_02.
After changing menuconfig in the figures, the vpif bootup is same as the former. Only one line "Linux video capture interface: v2.00".

But the video0 can be registered when i enable "Magazine Virtual Video Capture Board". When i want to set it again, i can not find the option "Magazine Virtual Video Capture Board". I don't know the reason.

video1 can be registered when i enable the "mem2mem". I can not find the video2 which is used for display.

In mcsdk, this is no omapl138_lcdk_defconfig, so i use the da850_lcdk_defconfig.

    I enable the tvp514x decoder.

I want to know, ti has no other vpif document for omapl138 lcdk? In mcsdk userguide, ti remonmend the document which i used for the first time.

  • Hi Hui,

I have enabled the VPIF capture support in my OMAPL138 SDI EVM board.

  • Hi, thank you very much. When i replace the default board file with your board file, the problem has been solved.
You said "Have you modified the your board file (pdata) for your camera hw?" in the first answer. I am sorry, because the problem is caused by this.I dont pay much attention to it.

I have my doubts now. Due to the lack of the encoder device for omapl138 lcdk, i want to disable the vpif display(video2, in my dev, this can not be used) and use the fb to display the image. The graphical LCD frame buffer and VPIF display are pin multiplexed. Is that okay?
Are there inevitable connections between vpif capture and vpif display?

  • Hi Hui,

Glad to hear that you got fixed too.

What are you trying to do?

Are there inevitable connections between vpif capture and vpif display?

The graphical LCD frame buffer and VPIF display are pin multiplexed. Is that okay?

    Yes.

You can choose both VPIF capture & VPIF display but not graphical LCD which support frame buffer.

VPIF Display pins were pinmuxed with GLCD (LCD control pins)

OMAPL138 LCDK board will support VPIF capture since it has "tvp5146x" encoder hw.

OMAPL138 LCDK board wont support VPIF display since it does not have "adv7343" decoder hw.

, i want to disable the vpif display(video2, in my dev, this can not be used) and use the fb to display the image

    Yes, It is possible.

We can support both VPIF capture & GLCD (through VGA in OMAPL138 LCDK)

Just, I enabled OMAPL13x FB support in menuconfig along with VPIF capture.

Now. I am able to boot my OMAPL138 LCDK board with VPIF capture (video0&1) and VGA display.

Please refer the OMAPL138 LCDK board schematics to know more.

  • Hi,

  • Thanks.   I think I have no more questions about boot.

I will use the vpif capture and frame buffer in my project.   Do ti have examples with   VPIF capture&VGA display for novice?

    Thank you once again
