GPIO Interface from User Space

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAPL138

Hi,

There are several posts regarding this issue, but there are no clear answers to what I believe should be a simple problem: Controlling some GPIOs from User Space.

I am using an OMAP L138 on a custom board with Linux PSP v3.22 and have recompiled the kernel to show /sys/class/gpio. I have further executed commands in Kernel Space such as:

echo 13 > /sys/class/gpio/export

echo "out" > /sys/class/gpio/gpio13/direction

etc.

The pin (GP0[13]) responds as expected which tells me that the Pin Multiplexing and GPIO Driver is correct/functional.

From the kernel documentation (gpio.txt) I deduce that by including the header "/linux/gpio.h" the function "gpio_is_valid" is a good place to start coding the User Space interface. However, this particular function  looks as follows (in gpio.h):

static inline bool gpio_is_valid(int number) {return false}

...which does not look particularly useful.

Further, this header leads to compilation errors as well.

My question is: Is it worth while sorting out the compilation errors in this header? All the functions in this header that gpio.txt refers to seem useless. Is there a better way to reach the GPIOs from User Space?

PS: I have set up I2C and SPI drivers in the kernel and access them from User Space using ioctls, which works well. Is there anything similar for GPIOs?

  • Prabhakar,

    Thanks for the quick response.

The code looks promising, the only problem is that when I include asm/gpio.h I get a very large amount of errors. As far as I know there are no compatibility issues between MCSDK 1_01_00_02 and Linux 3.3 PSP 3.22.00.06 and that my work space is fine. I don't usually get errors like these.

    What could be the problem?

  • Hi,

I am not sure where exactly you are including the asm/gpio.h, what are you exactly trying ? usually asm/* should be included in your user space apps.

    Thanks,

    --Prabhakar Lad

  • Hi,

I am trying to use GPIOs as outputs from User Space, I believe that is similar to what was being done in the Arago example you referred to. I believe that in order to use the GPIO functions, the asm/gpio.h header is required. I therefore inserted that into my own User Space application, similar to what was being done in the Arago example. Yet it leads to a very large amount of errors.

I do not understand how something as simple as GPIOs could be harder to interface with than I2C and SPI.

Perhaps if you could assist me in finding where exactly the functions such as "gpio_request" and "gpio_direction_input" (from the Arago example) are defined (I assume probably wrap-around headers), I could work from there...?

    Reino

  • Hi,

Could you please attach your build error logs?

Please do not do text paste your logs.

I am using an OMAP L138 on a custom board with Linux PSP v3.22 and have recompiled the kernel to show /sys/class/gpio. I have further executed commands in Kernel Space such as:

What is your exact SDK version?

I have driver that will support accessing the OMAPL138 EVM board's GPIOs from user space.

    5327.gpio_driver.tar.gz

    My linux SDK is  "DaVinci-PSP-SDK-03.22.00.02"

  • Hi Titus,

Thanks for the attachment, I will get on that immediately.

Linux-3.3-PSP03.22.00.06.sdk which comes with the MCSDK_1_01_00_02 package.

Please find the list of errors attached.

  • Hi,

    What files are you modifying?

Could you please attach it ?

Eventually, What are you trying to do really?

I knew that you need GPIO access from user space but which files should get modified for that?

I have tried to build module driver for MCSDK package too and got builded successfully.

Try to include "#include <linux/gpio.h>" this line to your code.

    #include <asm/gpio.h> to #include <linux/gpio.h>

  • Hi,

I am not sure what you mean by what files I am modifying? In connection with the GPIOs I am not modifying any of the files that comes with the package. I am only writing my own ARM Application from which I would, for a start, control the state of GP0[13] (output).

When including linux/gpio.h I notice the following:

--> There are no declarations of functions "might_sleep" or "WARN_ON"

--> It does not seem to know the type qualifier "bool"

Time delays are not an issue with the GPIO functionality I require. I am considering having the ARM messaging the DSP and then controlling the GPIOs from the DSP. It is significantly simpler to just control the GPIOs by writing directly to the control registers.

  • HI,

    I'm confused,

As of now, We are discussing about the GPIO (from user space) functionality in linux. Right!

Why do you referring the DSP code in linux such as SYSLINK stuffs now?

What type of source are you building?

Could you please elaborate your problem & steps that you followed to avoid misinterpretation.

  • Hi Titus,

You are correct, I would like to have all my GPIO interfacing to occur on the ARM, but as I cannot get the interfacing between my User Space code and the GPIO driver to work, I might as well control the GPIOs from the DSP for now.

It is critical that I get the GPIOs working ASAP.

    Reino

  • Hi,

If you need to access  the GPIO from DSP side, then we have GPIO examples from starterware & CSL packages.

    Note:

Please consider & Refer the the below TI wiki If you planned to access the same peripheral while you working with ARM & DSP

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/OMAP-L137_Audio_Drivers_in_the_DSP_%2B_Linux#Adapting_your_Linux_Kernel_to_avoid_conflicts

  • Hi Titus,

I have previously coded GPIO interfaces from the DSP and do find it much easier, but thanks.

And thank you for the link, I am sure it will prove very useful.

    Regards,

    Reino
