DM365DVR Reference Design

Hello,

We are in the early design phase of a DVR application and saw the DM365DVR reference design product brief online. We feel like this may be a useful tool that we could use in our development process. A few questions I had is whether you feel this solution would aid us in our development or if there is an alternative solution that you could recommend. What we need for our development is essentially a set top DVR reference design. It would accept a digital tv input. It would then have some sort of tuner which would allow the user to select a channel. This channel would then be converted to an appropriate format in order to be saved locally to some sort of internal memory. The device would then be required to access this stored video data for streaming to a television. This design would give the user the ability to pause, play, rewind, fast forward. Do you feel that this reference design would meet our requirements or is there an alternative (or updated) solution that you think would better suit our needs? Thank you for your help and we look forward to any help you can provide

Best Regards

Matt

  • Hello,

I just wanted to follow up on the above question.  To be more specific, the type of information we are looking for is:

Does the reference design include a tuner?

Is this design the most current or is there a more recent or relevant reference design that you would recommend?

Do you provide the actual hardware or the design files which we would fab?

Thank you for your help and we look forward to discussing this further.

  • Hi Matt,

Sorry for late response but I am really not expert in this area. However we can discuss on this .

    Are you talking about http://www.udworks.com/02_DVR/sub02.php

I dont see there is tuner in this design.

All the features you metioned(except for the digital tv tuner) are typical DVR application scenario. TI has several devices that can cover this kind of application.   We need to know:

    1. the resolution of the digital video that could be captured, or encoded.

    2. What kind of storage media is required, HDD through SATA, for example

    3. as it is like a set-up box, what kind of display port needed

    4. any extra capture port required?

    5 etc

I am not aware of digital tv tuner chips.

  • Hey Eason,

Thank you for getting back to me.  The link you provided above is for the DM368 reference design.  The following link are the line of TI reference designs I was looking at (specifically the DM365):

    http://www.ti.com.cn/cn/lit/ml/sprm512a/sprm512a.pdf

My first question is whether this reference design is simply the design files or if it is a full on development kit.  In other words are we purchasing actual hardware or just the design files to make the hardware?

The resolution of the digital video being captured would ideally be the highest resolution capable of being received by an HD DTV antenna (1080p), although this is not a firm requirement at the moment and we would be willing to drop to 720p or below to standard definition if necessary.

As for the storage medium, we do not have a firm requirement for what this is.  HDD through SATA would be certainly be ok for us.  I dont know what the options are for some sort of flash memory etc...

As far as the display port, this would either be an HDMI interface, or a coaxial cable interface.  This would basically allow the DVR to sit between your HD DTV antenna and your digital television.

We are only looking to capture 1 channel (as defined by the tuner) and there are no additional ports needed.  This input would likely be hdmi or coaxial as well.

I did notice the following tuner IC.  I am curious as to whether this would provide us with our input interface needed to complete the design:

  • Hi Matt,

I recommend using DM8148/DM8168 DVR ref design.

DM368 doesnt have SATA/HDMI port integrated on chip.   1080p30 is the max resolution that DM368 can process, if you have other application running, the performance might drop due to bandwidth limitation.   DM8148/DM8168 supports 1080p60 capturing(higher resolution is supported also), and the encoding capability equals 1080p60. I guess you wont hope there is bottle neck in the future, so using stronger platforms is recommended.

For SW side, DVRRDK can be provided under NDA. it is a full on development kit

Though I am not a expert on tuner, I doubt this part is not suitable because the datasheet shows it was released in 2005, i can not image that time 1080p is supported.  I suggest you post on other forums , like data converter forum.
