Questions about compositor/HDVPSS/HDVICP2

I want to develop a DVR with DM8165, here is several questions about the compositor/HDVPSS/HDVICP2 I want to confirm: 1. I want to display 2*1080P videos (from Vin0 and Vin1) in one screen at the same time, can the DM8165 support it? If can, how many videos can the DM8165 support to composite in one stream (I want to composite 5 videos to one stream)? 2. The HDVPSS of DM8165 can support two 1080P videos input in 60FPS each port, can I get the 4*1080P videos input but only in 25-30FPS each port? If can, how to do? 3. Can the DM8165 support 2*1080P (30FPS) encode and 1*VGA (30FPS) encode at the same time? Thanks.

Yes it possible to composite 2 1080P in one screen. There are 5 scalers in 816x each of which can process approx. 3 1080P30 or 1 1080P60 channel.Only 4 scalers can be used simultaneously. Depending on resolution and fps it should be possible to compose 5 channel in one screen.

Yes it is possible to capture 4 channel 1080P by using VIP0 PortA,VIP0 PortB,VIP1 PortA,VIP1 PortB,You will have to use 8 bit pixels if you want to capture 4 independent channels.

Yes .8165 has 2 HDVICP and it is possible to support 2*1080P30 + 1 VGA30e

  • Hi,Badri,Thanks for your quickly reply.

But in the document of DM816X(Table 3-2. Characteristics of the Processor), the description of HDVPSS is “1 16-bit and 24-bit HD Capture Channel or 2 8-bit SD Capture Channels”, If I use VIP0 PortA and VIP0 PortB, the HDVPSS only work in 8 bit SD capture channel mode, you mean the SD capture channel can capture the HD(1080P) video input? About the compositor,  according to your explanation I can compose over 5 videos into one stream in DM8165 without the limitation of scaler.

I want to use the Dm8165 to design our new DVR product, we need to input and encode 2*1080P+1*VGA videos, compose the three videos into one stream to display at the same time, I want to confirm the resources of DM8165 are enough or not. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

  • VIP port is limited to 165 Mhz pixel rate. You can capture any resolution as long as pixel rate is limited to less than 165 Mhz. Several customers have captured 4 ch 1080P30 8 bit on 816x.

Yes this is possible on 8165.Will you be capturing the VGA channel or will you be scaling the 1080P to VGA and encoding it ?

  • Thanks a lot. I got it,so I can capture 2*1080P videos(30FPS) from camera and 1*VGA videos(30FPS) from PC and encode the three videos independently at the same time with DM8165.If we want to encode 3*1080P videos(30FPS) and 1*VGA videos(30FPS), Can DM8165 support? or we must change to the DM8167?

  • 8165 has 2 HDVICP. One HDVICP can do 1 ch 1080P60 or 2 ch 1080P30. So you will be able to do 3 ch 1080P30 + 1 ch VGA encode.
