Ethernet to FieldBus Bridge

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3359, TMDSICE3359

I am looking for an embedded solution to design an Ethernet to Sercos III (Master) bridge.  Other Real-Time Field busses will follow (EtherCat, etc.)  I have found many TI Arm devices that may accomplish this task.  However, I would like to get a Eval/development kit to get started.  What are my options?  As a requirement, I need a dedicated Ethernet and a single PRU-[] unit, I think?  Please advise me of any options that fit these criteria.

Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks.  I did go through that (AM3359) to some degree. There was another that apper I see where i could develop the PRU side of the bridge, but I did not see where there was another Ethernet port populated on the board.  Also, i did not find any daughter board that may connect through the expansion.

I originally found TMDXIDK3359 but it is marked obsolete, so i was reluctant to get one in for development.  ???

PS.  I called TI support and they directed me to this forum.  They indicated that the "Factory Engineers" that developed these EVM(s) would respond to my question.  I could develop a daughter board if necessary.  I would rather not.  I am looking for a turn key solution (Hardware) to develop the software that completes the idea that attached in visual form.

Ethernet (TCP/IP) to Sercos III (Master)  There are many sercos III slave options but it appears that I will most likely have to develop a master.

thanks again for any possible solutions.

  • We have obsoleted the IDK because everything it does can be done with our EVM or the new ICE board.

For Sercos III master you do not need PRU, so it could use regular Ethernet port, usually the slave has latency issues, so this is why we use PRU for the slaves.

  • I preface this post with a warning -- there a a lot of question in this post.

okay, thanks.  That is helpful.  I have a feeling that once i finish theSercos III to Ethernet bridge many other interfaces will follow.

Do you think this is possible using this platform AM3359 to develop one hardware platform and create an:

Ethernet to All Master Real-time busses

Does TI offer Master Stacks, and will they not need the PRU? Is there COST?  or Third Party?

Ethercat physical needs two MAC units to pass before consume data, so will be able to produce an EtherCat (Master) on the TMDSICE3359?

The reason I ask these question is to get a pacification of reduced risk before we start the prototype phase, or in my case reduce risk of diving deep into the technical documents and software stacks only to come up short and have to go else where.

When i called TI directly i was looking for an Application Field Engineer to assist me in making the decision that all facets of making an Ethernet to a Industrial Real-Time interface were encapsulated in this processor and Eval unit. So...

From your previous posts, you seem to be stating that this is possible with the AM3359 and this new EVM, is that correct?

We normally do not use RTOS type development or Android/Linux so there will be some hesitation.  I have RTOS development and integration experience (BIOS, FreeRTOS, KEIL RT-OS, etc "small uC") so can we use the RT Industrial stacks standalone or will we have to include an OS or RTOS? to ease integration?

I will begin diving into the Documentation and suggest that we get the new EVM in, as it is low cost anyway.

Will CCS connect to this EVM without a license?

Thanks for all your help Rogerio
