Which 2GByte DDR2 RAM POP can be interfaced to OMAP4460? Please provide Part number.

Which 2GByte DDR2 RAM POP  can be interfaced to OMAP4460?
I want to design a application board based on OMAP processor, I want to know the product ID and vendor details for that RAM, so that I can go for the design. Requirement is 2GByte (NOT2G'bit') POP for OMAP4460.

  • Hello Rushi,

Have you considered the following recommendations, described in OMAP4460 TRM:

     - the maximum size for each DDR supported is 1 GB. 2-GB SDRAM address ranges over two chip-selects (CSs) (1GB per CS) (configurable with the dynamic memory manager (DMM) module;

The two EMIF modules have features:
    • Two independent CSs with their corresponding register sets and independent page tracking
    • JEDEC standard-compliant LPDDR2-SDRAM (S2 and S4) devices
Memory density up to 8 Gbits supported per CS. Total address space is limited to 2GB = 16 Gbits

You can interface following DDR2 devices:

    MT42L256M32D2LK-18 WT - 1GB

EDB8164B3PF-8D-F - 1GB - This device is supported in the TI's software releases. There are several device (Pandaboard, Blaze) in combination with OMAP4.

    K3PE0E000M-XG(2) - 2GB - 2CH x32/ch; 216-FBGA, 12x12 PoP, QDP, 128Mx32*4

However, I cannot provide more information about this DDR device because Samsung does not provide datasheet in their site.

I suggest you to contact Samsung to provide you more information about this product.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Hello Yonko,

Thanks for the reply, I am looking for the 16GBit/2GByte only.

    Q1) How about this? http://goo.gl/hK4twR

Q2) What can be the power considerations for using this memory with OMAP4460?

  • Hello Rushi,

    #Q1: How about this? http://goo.gl/hK4twR

    - Yes, this IC LPDDR2 SDRAM 16GBIT VFBGA (PoP) can be interfaced with OMAP4460.

    You must observe this:

    Package: 216-ball FBGA
    — Package size: 12.0mm × 12.0mm

    — Ball pitch: 0.4mm

However, you must contact with Micron, because this device is not available on market:

#Q2: What can be the power considerations for using this memory with OMAP4460?

For detail information about interfacing between LPDDR2 with OMAP4460 you can see in OMAP4460 data manual - http://www.ti.com/pdfs/wtbu/OMAP4460_ES1.x_DM_Public_Book_V_A.pdf

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Dear Yanko,

Thanks for the perfect answer. Yeah, I am following Pandaboard Design.

Is there any same part which can be in stock, can you suggest? from any supplier?

    Thanks

  • Hello Rushi,

Other similar LPDDR2 device is K3PE0E000M-XG, which I already pointed. It is needed to contact Samsung, to get information for buying and official distributors.

For MT42L256M64D4LM-18 WT device, you must contact Micron or some of the distributors, to get information about availability of this device.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Hi Yanko,

I need one clarification regarding the RAM Clock frequency.

The RAM from the Samsung (Part Number and Product Selection Guide linked Below)

    is 1066MHz.

    K3PE0E000M-XG(2) or K3PE0E000C-XG(2)

    http://www.samsung.com/us/business/oem-solutions/pdfs/PSG_2H_2012.pdf

You would be knowing that, EDB8164B3PF-8D-F is the RAM which is used to interface with OMAP4460 on Pandaboard, Elpida RAM Datasheet

Q] Is it suitable to use 1066MHz LPDDR2 memory to interface with OMAP4460? Can you provide Maximum Data and Clock rates supported with OMAP4460, too?

    PS:

I have referred to OMAP Data Manual and TRM, but I haven't found any specific mention about the maximum frequency supported.

    TRM Says : "JEDEC standard-compliant LPDDR2-SDRAM (S2 and S4) devices" on page 3338.

Keywords in TRM I find relevant is: PHY_ROOT_CLK, lpddr2_clk, EMIFi_FCLK is equal to DDR_PHY_CLK divided by 2.

MY GUESS: EMIFi_FCLK = DDR_PHY_CLK/4 therefore, If I provide 266MHz to EMIFi_FCLK by setting the registers, then I would be able to drive 1066MHz.

    Please suggest.

Your help will be a great support. Thanks in Advance.

  • Hello Rushi,

    About your question:

#Q: Is it suitable to use 1066MHz LPDDR2 memory to interface with OMAP4460Can you provide Maximum Data and Clock rates supported with OMAP4460, too?

    - Yes, EMIF module in OMAP4460 is compatible with LPDDR2 memory. I would like to notice you that in Elpida RAM datasheet and Jedec standard 1066 does not correspond to 1066MHz. This is the maximal data rate.

Frequency values are for reference only. Clock cycle time (tCK) shall be used to determine device capabilities.

For Elpida EDB8164B3PF => Clock frequency is 533MHz and Data Rate is 1066Mbps.

About Maximum clock rates, I suggest you to refer to chapter 4 Clock Specifications in OMAP4460 Data manual.

A good approach for clock configurations is by using OMAP4460 CTT - OMAP4460 Clock Tree Tool (v1.8.0.4)

See table Table 15-95. Clocks and Resets in OMAP4460 TRM, where are listed all clock signal to EMIF module from PRCM.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Thanks for the quick reply Yanko,

All you said is very correct, but I could not be able to take any inference from it.

As I mentioned in the previous reply that,

"The RAM from the Samsung (Part Number and Product Selection Guide linked Below)

is 1066MHzK3PE0E000M-XG(2) or K3PE0E000C-XG(2). " Which you can see on this link.

In short, Whether the EMIF will be able to provide clock to this specific memory?

I will surely consider the CTT as you said, thanks for the suggest.

  • Hi Rushi,

I checked in OMAP4460 Operating Condition Addendum and EMIF module does not support 1066MHz.

    Maximal possible frequency is 800MHz.                                                                         OPP100   OPP50

Based on the information in Samsung selection guide, I cannot find information about 1066MHz for this memories. There is a note for data rate, which is  1066Mbps.

I suggest you to see in detail memory data sheet and check the clock frequency for this devices.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Hi Yanko,

Thanks for the detail. This will really help. I got to know the limitation of EMIF.

Can you provide me the link of  "Operating Condition Addendum" Document?

Regarding the Samsung RAM, The attached link in the previous post had the memory details. Please see the image attached below from the same document. 1066 is mentioned as MHz for LPDDR2.

Am I reading correct? Here is the link of the document.

    http://www.samsung.com/us/business/oem-solutions/pdfs/PSG_2H_2012.pdf

    Thanks.

  • Hello Rushi,

Can you provide me the link of  "Operating Condition Addendum" Document? - Please contact your TI sales representative. This document for OMAP4460 is under NDA agreement. You can see in OMAP4470 OPC addendum http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swpu325/swpu325.pdf

    EMIF modules are the same.

You read correctly correctly. However, I suggest you to check in K3PE7E700M-XG datasheet for supported clock frequency.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Okay,

I will look over these document and Datasheet of Samsung Memories. Although, I have contacted Samsung to provide me datasheets of this particular memory.

    Thanks for everything, Yanko.
