Whats the dynamic range of the TMS320C6416 kit?

I'd like to do frequency modulation on the 6416 and I'm not what the dynamic range is,such as what's the highest voltage and frequency it can handle?

I know that the datasheet says something as high as 600MHz but am not sure what's that for because my supervisor stressed that the intermediate frequency after down conversion needs to be around 40-50kHz....Am I misreading the datasheet?

  • Hello Siyam,

The C6416 device core operating frequency is upto 720MHz (7E3 variant). And the core operating voltage is 1.4V (7E3 variant).

Do you want the change the frequency/voltage dynamically ?

Could you please elaborate your requirement ?

  • Yes,I want to use the kit as an FM modulator,So I need to know if the output of the RF mixer can be fed directly into the DSP kit thats why I need to know the dynamic range of the kit.

So I won't get any hassles if I feed in a frequency of about 10.7MHz to the kit?

1.7V seems a bit odd.Surely the kit should be able to handle 5Vp-p signal at the very least right?

  • Hello Siyom,

How you are planning to feed the RF mixer output to the DSP kit ?

Are you using C6416 DSP starter kit ?

Please note 720MHz is core operating frequency and each individual peripheral has its own limitation on the frequency of operation.

At any point of time, you cannot feed 5Vp-p signal to the DSP as its IOs absolute maximum rating is limited to 4V.

  • I will have to code a whole lot of sections that come before modulation like the IF filter and AD/C,So my IF will be fed into my IF filter once it is coded.

Ok so basically my RF amplifier will have to be adjusted according that spec..This means I will have to do a bit of reading on the different sections of the starter kit so that I get an idea.

I once did a small built in tutorial where I had to change the specs of an FIR filter and feed in a signal to see if it worked. Can I extend this higher IF frequencies?

Also can I program my kit to produce an Oscillator frequency of 10.7MHz?

  • The reason for this question is that I want to avoid using multiple mixers for my down conversion in order to put my frequency at an acceptable level..So I guess I kinda have to now

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your update.

You can go ahead to extend to higher IF frequencies and appropriately, you can tune the whole lot of sections in the code like IF filters and ADC.

Please check in the specs. whether do you see any limitations in oscillator frequency, if not so,you can go ahead to program to generate oscillator frequency of 10.7MHz.

    Thanks & regards,
