Do i miss anything when try to upload u-boot-spl.bin via ttyUSB1

Hi,

I was trying to follow the uboot board port training and after compiled the uboot template file, I was able to locate the u-boot-spl.bin file and do the minicom boot but somehow nothing showed up on minicom screen only the cursor blinking. What should i look into at this point? is there something I was missing? Any suggestion is appreciated.

Hi,

The console output is configured on UART0 by default . What do you mean by booting via ttyUSB1? Please see Table 26-7 in the AM335X TRM Rev. K for valid boot combinations.

Hi, thanks for the response.

so here is the page I was following:

I think what the author is trying to show how to make the am335x processor boot from the minicom terminal, so ttyUSB1 is the channel to communicate with the board. (please see the web page above)

I was able to get the "CCCCCC" when I reset the board but when I ask it to boot from the USB (via minicom) it doesn't work.

I am not quite familiar with Sitara, I appreciate the documents you recommended in your last posted.

OK, I understand now. Please tell me is this the Beaglebone White, Beaglebone Black or a custom board? On the Beaglebone White UART0 is routed through an FTDI USB-to-serial converter.

OK, you are trying UART boot then. What I think happens is that you load only the SPL. In the wiki you mentioned above look at the whole step 9. You need to upload the u-boot.img file quickly after the SPL or the board will timeout.

But it didn't do as the article says ----"Minicom will display a message that the download is complete so press any key to continue." I didn't see anything after starting the u-boot-spl.bin uploading

Is there other way you can suggest to see if the file has been transferred?

it's Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit), I use minicom setup on /dev/ttyUSB1

Thanks Biser, I will try figure it out. I have a question though, is this process actually loading the uboot files to the processor RAM ? Or it's actually the uboot files stay on the host side and cpu boot up from the USRT port by reading the files from the host?

It's a two-stage process: first MLO is loaded into AM335X internal RAM, then control is passed to MLO which does further initialization (most importantly the EMIF), and finally MLO loads u-boot into external DDR and passes control to it.

I'll try to help you to upload u-boot-spl.bin and u-boot.img with picocom terminal program (I work with it). If you are needed to install it you have to type:
sudo apt-get install picocom
You have to do the next step to boot from UART:
1. Use the u-boot.img and also the u-boot-spl.bin from the ./spl folder.
2. Set the EVM switches for UART boot (1-5: 10000)
3. Start picocom from the folder containing the UART boot images (board is OFF):
# picocom -b 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 --send-cmd "sx -vv"
4. Press CTRL+A; CTRL+S; to send the u-boot-spl.bin file via UART and then start the board.
5. After transfer is complete press CTRL+A; CTRL+S; to send the u-boot.img file.
6. After transfer is complete U-Boot will start.

Hi Ivan,

It seems like minicom is the problem, picocom seems to work with this one. How come picocom is better? Thought it was a smaller version of minicom...
