Board design to support multiple Industrial Ethernet protocols on AM335x ICSS

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLK110

Our customer wants to design the board which can support multiple Industrial Ethernet protocols, e.g. EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and Profinet, on AM335x ICSS only by a change of the software. The design of the ICE board achieves it. However, their current board is not fully same as the design of the ICE board. The pins connect to TLK110 directly on their board, which are as follows.

Can this connection support multiple Industrial Ethernet protocols on ICSS?

Best regards,

Daisuke

  • Hi Daisuke,

I will forward this to the support team. Feedback will be posted here.

  • Hi Daisuke,

    Feedback below:

Basically this covers 100Mbps FD connectivity via PRU_ICSS MII ports (This is Ok for EtherCAT, Profinet. EthernetIP may need HD depending on customer use case). If there is Half Duplex requirements customer needs to connect PR1_MIIn_COL/CRS pins from PHY. In addition to this, certain Industrial ethernet protocols have specific LED requirements - in ICE EVM, we tried to generalize this via tri color LEDs, but customers need to do some homework here, if they plan to certify their products as there is specific labelling and positioning (Link/Activity LEDs mounted on Port for eg:-) requirements from the standard specs. Our EVM tries to be close but it is not really an end product.
  •  Hi Daisuke

The pin substitution you propose using Option 2 for the receive pins can be done by setting the PRU-ICSS Internal Signal Mux: pin_mux_sel[0] to 1.

If you would like more information on this, please look at is AM335x Technical Reference Manual in section 4.2.4 PRU-ICSS Internal Pinmux.

  • Hi Biser and David,

    Thank you for your reply.

The customer will check other requirements, e.g. Half-Duplex, LEDs , for each protocol.

There is update for the customer board. The pins connect to TLK110 on their latest board as follows.

This can work for EtherCAT. If this connection has any issue, please tell me it.

    Best regards,

    Daisuke
