uboot versions for beaglebone black

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DA8XX, TPS65217

Dear TI E2E Community,

I am using uboot 2014.07 from ftp://ftp.denx.de/pub/u-boot/u-boot-2014.07.tar.bz2 instead of u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01 which is part of ti sdk 7, am using this because the verified boot feature is not supported in u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01 & moreover ti sdk 7 kernel & rootfs is coming up with this uboot 2014.07

Could you please let me know whether all the u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01 BSP support features for Beaglebone black that exists in u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01 also exists in u-boot-2014.07(since this is mainline version) or is there any feature that is being missed in u-boot-2014.07 (for beaglebone black) that needs to be ported to 2014.07 from u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01

Could anybody please confirm on this, as I need to finalize which version of uboot to be used

Kindly do the needful as early as possible

Awaiting for your replies,

Many Thanks in advance

  • Hi Srini,

We recommend using the u-boot that comes with the SDK (I haven't tested mainline u-boot on my AM335x Starter kit). But in my experience with other TI EVMs mainline contains all the features needed and usually it is a good replacement for the u-boot located withing SDKs.

However you may need to tune it in the sense of booting the kernel & file system.. whether you'd like to do peripheral boot (using fastboot), sd card etc..

Have you tried to boot kernel and file system on your Beaglebone Black board ? Do you need to do modifications to mainline in order to load kernel & FS on your board? If not, then in my opinion you can replace the SDK7 u-boot with mainline u-boot.

    Best Regards,

    Yordan

  • Thanks a lot Yordan for your suggestions,

    1) Could you please verify uboot-2104.07(ftp://ftp.denx.de/pub/u-boot/u-boot-2014.07.tar.bz2), in Beaglebone black from your end & confirm as early as possible so that this version of uboot can be finalized for my custom board(as it is based on beaglebone black)

    2) As of now am using eMMC boot (after copying images from SD card as per Ivan's method), probably in future I would be using fastboot as well, & I have not tested fastboot feature in uboot-2104.07, could you please test & let me know whether this feature is supported in uboot-2104.07 for Beaglebone black or any other TI EVM's if you have already tested

    3) Yes I tried to boot ti sdk 7's linux kernel & rootfs & I have attached the logs as well

Could you please finally suggest me can I go ahead with uboot 2014.07 or still use u-boot located within SDK's

Kindly do the needful as early as possible

Many Many Thanks a lot Yordan for your timely support Once again

  • Hi,

I don't have BBB at my disposal, so I tested mainline on my AM335x Starter Kit.

-1- It works fine on my board. I had no problems booting the SDK7 from sd card with the mainline u-boot. All u-boot commands I tested (setenv, printenv, md etc.. ) worked fine on my board.

-2- when built with am335x_evm configuration u-boot does not support fastboot. You will have to enable this feature yourself for the Sitara configuration.

-3- As I said, I had no problems booting on my AM335x Starter Kit, I don't see error messages in your log either.

    Best Regards,

    Yordan

  • Thanks a lot for your quick updates Yordan

Could you please finally update me on the following

By default fastboot feature is not enabled in  u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01 in ti sdk also or what?..

if we need to enable how this feature can be enabled in u-boot-2013.10-ti2013.12.01?..

    Many Thanks in advance,

    Correct, both u-boots (mainline & SDK7 u-boot) don't support fastboot.

In my experience, I've used fastboot only when working with Android on OMAP4 devices. You can check how this is implemented for OMAP4 configuration. Aadding cmd_fastboot will be very challenging; you don't have the command source (cmd_fastboot.c) added in u-boot/common folder.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
    Yordan
