AM3517_Android Start_up

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3517

Hello Folks,

We are designing a handheld device which used AM3517 Processor. We are olanning to run Android OS on it. We are new to ARM processors.

My query is,

1. Do any one work on AM3517/Android combo?

2. We have the board in hand. How can we test the board for its working initially?

3. We will be glad to know anyone who has the latest Linux Kernel compiled for Android with AM3517 settings.

Kindly address on the above questions.

Thanks in advance!

  • Dear Rajiv,

    1. more than likely. As the AM3517 core (ARM Cortex-A8) and the main peripherals are very similar to OMAP35xx you might also look there.

    2. easiest would be to download the Linux PSP from our site and use the pre-compiled binaries. All setup steps are in the docs or on  the wiki:

    http://wiki.davincidsp.com/index.php/AM35x_Getting_Started_Guide

    3. Again you might look into other work e.g. BeagleBoard

I think there were also a couple of 3Ps announcing Android support for OMAP3. Should apply to AM3517 very well.

    Regards.

  • Hello Frank,

    Thanks for the immediate reply.

Actually, upto my knowledge Android will run only on the Linux version 2.6.29. But the Linux PSP which TI has given is for 2.6.31. So inorder to run Android, we need the PSP for 2.6.29 version Linux Kernel.

    1. What shall we do from our part to get the PSP for 2.6.29?

    2. Who will be helping on this? Could you please direct us?

    Thanks again

    Rajiv

  • Actually I am not an Android expert... but as far as I know they modified the kernel anyway. So a stock TI PSP kernel indeed does not help. I was just mentioning the PSP in order to test the board.

For real Android use you either wait for someone else from TI here to comment or you start to search around for a 3P that supports Android on our platforms.

I don't have any details on our plans for Android support for AM3517. Sorry.

  • And see here: http://wiki.davincidsp.com/index.php/Android - lots of 3Ps listed. If they support OMAP3505 then AM3517 should be easy too.

Also a search for  'Android' on www.ti.com gives a few more links...

  • Hello Frank,

Thanks again for the reply. I hope we will get some leads with the links which you have given.

Could you please direct us a TI employee working on Android?

Currently there are no TI employees officially working on Android for the AM3517 (at least that I am aware of), it is really a third party only solution at this point as suggested by the Android third party link Frank pointed out, but I am hoping that changes in the future as it has some broad ranging features. I believe Mentor Graphics is looking at Android for AM3517, I am not sure if the other third party Android companies mentioned on that page are doing any work toward AM3517 support.
