mounting rootfs on/ failed.... /etc/fstab problem?

Just trying to address any errors I see in the boot log of the kernel and I'm down to the last two errors;

root: mount: mounting rootfs on / failed: No such file or directory
root: mount: mounting usbfs on /proc/bus/usb failed: No such file or directory

Are these because the /etc/fstab file is trying to mount these files? If so I understand why the usbfs won't work as i have not included that in my driver and no usb device is present... however i dont understand the first error. Of course my file system is mounted at /, and i can see that using the ls command. Is this line necessary? What is it trying to do? Can i remove this line in fstab in the filesystem?
