How bone script works on BBB

This is a good document explain how gpio works:

But you have to know that to access gpio you have to do these steps;
1. Pin mux as gpio pins
2. Request gpio number - gpio_request(number, "sample_name")
3. Setting the gpio pin as input/output - gpio_direction_input(number)/gpio_direction_output(number, level)
4. Exporting that particular pin - gpio_export(number, true) - this step is not mandatory if you manipulate this gpio only from kernel
5. Get/set value from/to gpio pin - gpio_get_value(number)/gpio_set_value(number, value)

I'm more to understand how the BONE SCRIPT works. It will bypass device driver and access the GPIO pins directly or how it interact with hardware?

In bone script i seen digiwrite(gpio_pin, value). How it interact with GPIO pins from user space ?
