About DM8148 power

Hi,

We are designing a custom board for our customer which has DM8148 and FPGA. Initially we thought of using external regulators with highest efficiency for power rails of DM8148. But then TI recommended us to use TPS6591133 for DM8148 power up sequencing.

DM8148 has number of power rails. Can anybody tell the tentative power consumption of each rail in DM8148 (spreadsheet doesn't give the power consumption of each rail).

This data will be very much helpful to us as we would know how many vias should be put and also to decide between power plane and trace width of power rail, since our board is space constrained, complex and highly densed which has got less number of layers (customer requirement).

Thanks in advance

I think that DM814x Power spreadsheet provides the power consumption of each power rail (CVDD_ARM, CVDD_DSP, CVDD_HDVICP, etc). We do not have other document regarding power consumption.

  • Hi Pavel,

It doesn't provide the power consumption of VDDA_USB_1V8, PLL_1V8, VDAC_1V8, HDMI_1V8, VDAC_3V3 rails. whether these powers are considered in the DM8148 power spreadsheet.

We will not be using SATA and PCIe in our board. Will it lower the power consumption? Or Is it the same , since we provide the voltages to these cores eventhough we don't use it?

    Regards

It should be very small (just a few mA) compared to the other power supplies. Hence. it was not included as a separate item.

Yes it should lower it, but very small (just a few mA)

  • Thanks Pavel,

Even though it is few mA I should decide on PCB layout as should I use trace or shape for these power rails , If it is trace what should be its width, as i already told you we are designing a complex board which doesn't have much room to give shapes which is unnecessary. So my request is whether TI has any rough figures about the current ratings of these rails.

    Madhura
  • Madhura,

Your PCB layout engineer should know how to trace/shape your board for these few mA current consumption. For reference you can have a look in the DM814x TI EVM gerber files.

See also the attached file below, might be in help:

    Copper_Current_Nomograph.pdf

  • Hi Pavel,

We purchased TI Mistral EVM for our reference, But we didn't find any board file in the privided documents folder other than gerbers s, codes. Is it possible to share it with us?

    Regards,
    Madhura
  • Madhura,

I mean Gerber files available from the below link:

    www.mistralsolutions.com/.../support-downloads

Available Downloads for TMDXEVM8148 -> HARDWARE -> Downloads for TMDXEVM8148 – Base Board -> Rev D -> Gerbers -> 274x (you should have Gerber viewer for open these files).

    Regards,
    Pavel
