Production licensing with Montavista

Hi,

I am developing my own board based on the DM355, and plan to produce it at 500 units a year. The board will run proprietary code on top of Linux Montavista. What licensing issues am I facing for the OS? Our software was developed on DVSDK 1.4. From this page,
http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/linuxdvsdk-dv.html
it sounds like it would be free, but I am not sure of that.

Please let me know. I really appreciate your help. Thanks,

Jorge

  • This is a good question for your own legal department, my understanding is that the Linux source code included with the MVL package is all under GPL and thus freely distributable, but I am not a lawyer so I would not take my own word for it. In newer DVSDK packages we now include a software manifest which lists all the software in the DVSDK with the license type it uses, making such a decision easier, but I believe DVSDK 1.4 predates the manifests, though even with this you would probably want to consult your legal department.

  • Bernie, I agree with you.  There are no OS run-time licensing issues for MV Linux since it is still open-source.  MV license subscriptions are required if a customer is currently using some of MV’s proprietary tools, but is not required for run-times.

  • Thank you so much to both of you. I have forwarded your answers to the appropriate people.
