Careers: High Performance Computing, C/C++, Software Developing/Programming, etc...

Looking for a career change. Currently a CNC machinist/programmer but the oil and gas industry isn't looking too well imo. Wondering if anyone with experience in the IT Computer Science field can point me in the right direction. (For instance, if I want to go for a high performance computing career path, how would I get started?) Any feedback/help is much appreciated.
