DIFFERENCE BETWEEN XIP BOOT AND PARALLEL NAND BOOT in AM335X

Hi,

As we are going through the AM335X TRM, we find in the Initialization that there is XIP interface associated with NOR Boot and GPMC interface associated with NAND Boot and in the NAND Boot there is something called image shadowing. Can some one explain the difference between the two and what is image shadowing?

Again if i want to boot my processor through a parallel OTP, Which mode should i use?

Hi Mohit,

XIP is an abbreviation for eXecute In Place, meaning that the code can be directly executed from the device connected to the GPMC. The device must be direct addressable, memory mapped type, like parallel NOR flash, SRAM or OTP.

NAND, on the other hand is a block device (similar to SD cards) and code cannot be executed directly from it. This is where image shadowing comes in. This means that code must first be copied from the GPMC device to processor memory, and once this is done execution is passed to the copied image.

Is NOR Flash less reliable for storing program and data code as we plan to use it?

On the contrary, NOR is the most reliable flash technology. NAND flash is the less reliable one.
