Removing Level Shifters from BeagleBone Cape

Hello Team,

I want to leverage the BeagleBone and WL8 module cape designs. To save space, I was wondering if I could eliminate the level shifters between the AM335x and the WL8 module. The AM335x datasheet refers to an ability to run the MMCSD0 port at 1.8V presumably to support 1.8V SD cards on boot, but I was hoping we may be able to use this port as an SDIO bus for direct connection to the WL8 module and use the boot SD card on a different MMC port.  Since I couldn’t find any details online about doing this, I am guessing it makes no sense, but I figured I would check with the experts. What do you think, is this possible?

  • Hi James,

AM335X I/O cell are powered from the VDDSHV[1:6] power rails. These rails can be connected either to 1.8V or 3.3V, but the voltage cannot be dynamically switched. To determine from which VDDSHVx rail a given I/O is powered you need to check Table 4-1 from the AM335X Datasheet Rev. H. Note that all I/O cells connected to a given VDDSHVx rail will work at the same voltage levels. These may be more than the ones you need.
