AM335x Kernel plans? (3.18, 4.1, 4.2)

I'd like to know the plans for upcoming "SDK" / Kernel-releases.

Can see that there are 3.18 tags as well as work done in the 4.1 branch over at

Can someone from the TI Sitara team shed some light on the state of these branches what peripherals that are in place in the ti-kernels vs. mainline.

    Hi David,

    Here is some information (quoting from another correspondence):

    "TI upstreams most of our kernel work and is always working with the Linux community to get more up. That being said, there will be features on TI's tree that may not have made it to mainline. So, our recommendation, is to use TI's trees, specifically the tags aligned with our Processors SDK releases, which are published with the SDK.

    Q) On what basis are changes pushed to mainline, are there plans to support certain kernel versions (like some long term supported mainline kernel versions), and others not? What are those?

    We generally push all of our stuff that can be pushed to mainline. Some features do not lend themselves to upstream for a variety of reasons. We will align releases of the SDK to LTS versions. See more on roadmap below.

    Q) In general, could you share some detailed linux kernel roadmaps? For the current setup: is (better) support for the am437x-evm planned for mainline, or already in a newer mainline kernel? If so, could you point us to that kernel version?

    Essentially, in the second half of each year we plan to release an SDK based on the SDK for that year. For example, 4.1 was recently announced as the 2015 LTS kernel. We will release an SDK based on this kernel toward the end of this year. Then, next year, probably in 2Q, we will release a "dot" release to foll the 2015 LTS kernel to a newer update. Then, toward the end of 2016, we will align with the announced 2016 LTS. 2 releases per year, one major, one minor, all on the announced LTS kernel.

    We plan to support the Preempt-RT patch set with the SDK toward the end of this year. Some customers have gotten it to work themselves, others have used 3rd parties. The Preempt-RT patch set should always "apply" to the TI kernel, as we simply apply patches to kernel.org. All of this can be seen and examined on git. Full support and validation will come in 4Q."

    Thanks, that clarifies things. So no 3.18 SDK in between current 3.14 and 4.1, correct?

    That's correct. No plans to release a SDK on 3.18.
