Help choosing upgrade path from C6713B

We are looking to upgrade a design which is based on a C6713B processor and will require slightly higher performance. We are comparing the C6727B and the C674x. The C6727B is attractive due to the amount of design reuse it enables (we are on a tight schedule) but we have some concerns about the product lifetime and power consumption relative to the C674x. So we have two questions:

What is the projected production lifetime for the C6727B?
What is the difference in power consumption between the C6727B and the C674x, assuming they are running the same process (e.g., would it consume 20% less power? etc..).

Hello Travis,

I would recommend you to upgrade to C674x as this is low power and well stabilized device. I cannot predict the production lifetime of C6727B device as this is old device. Please refer the below wiki pages which would be very helpful for you to migrate to C674x.

The power consumption of C674x is much lesser compared to C6727B. Please refer below wiki for the comparison between two devices.

Hi Senthil,
Thank you for the information. Can you offer any kind of estimate on the 6727 lifetime? For example, based on previous products, how much longer would it remain in production if it were to be announced as an end of life component tomorrow? It would save us a fair amount of development time and the project in which it may be used is not necessarily intended to have a long production lifetime. Thanks.

This device is already over 10 years old. It may very well have another 10 years of life, though I cannot make any guarantees. TI goes to great effort to keep parts in production.

Are you saying it would be easier to move to the 6727 than the 6748? Personally I think you are MUCH better off with the 6748. Its cache architecture is substantially better than the 6727. The 6713 and 6727 are both 130nm devices. When we moved to the 6727 we were able to reduce the cost by gutting the cache architecture. There is only L1P on the 6727. The 6748 on the other hand goes back to the two level cache architecture (L1P, L1D, L2) more like what you are accustomed to on the 6713. Also, because it is a 65nm device you get a substantial improvement in cost and performance! I think you'll get better support from TI and the rest of the community on the 674x as well.

Hi Brad,

Thank you very much for offering your insight. I had thought that the 6727 would be an easier transition because we have an existing 32-bit FPGA interface and existing code to run a 16-bit USB interface, but now that I've dug into the 6727 I see that there are only two chip selects on the EMIF and one is dedicated for SDRAM, so I'm not seeing a way to run both the FPGA and the USB off the EMIF. It's looking like we may not be able to re-use those designs even on the 6727, in which case the 674x is an almost obvious choice. Thanks again.
