    2. Could you check SDA and SCL signals states with oscilloscope?

    I2C timeout errors have been seen on some other platforms due to the wrong pullup configuration.
    Pullup should be disabled in PADCONF and enabled in PINCNTL registers, else can cause instability on I2C lines.
    Something as in u-boot configuration for /board/ti/ti811x/evm.c

    /* Setup the PADCNTL Registers for I2C0 */
    + val = __raw_readl(0x48140C18);
    + val |= 0x001;
    + __raw_writel(val, 0x48140C18);
    + val = __raw_readl(0x48140C1C);
    + val |= 0x001;
    + __raw_writel(val, 0x48140C1C);
    +
    + /* Init the I2C0 peripheral */
    + i2c_init (CONFIG_SYS_I2C_SPEED, CONFIG_SYS_I2C_SLAVE);
    +

    3. I suggest you to apply some patches related with I2C modules:

  • Hello Anoop,

    PADCONF is the same as PINCNTL.

    My next suggestion is trying to rebuild your kernel with recommended audio settings:

    In the default menuconfig & omap2plus_defconfig audio options are included as modules <M>

    Try rebuilding the kernel with:

    <*> Sound card support

    <*> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture

    <*> ALSA for SoC audio support

    See the pictures:

    In addition, "i2c 1-0020: uevent" - this message comes from incorrect defined I2C devices.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • tisdk_c6a811x-evm_defconfig is the config used for the J5 Eco CPU board as per documentation. In this defconfig, audio drivers are NOT compiled in as Modules. As per your suggestion, I modified the config to "Build all ASoC CODEC drivers" as below.

    ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
    --- ALSA for SoC audio support
    <*> SoC Audio for the TI81XX chip
    <*> SoC Audio support for TI81XX EVM
    < > On-chip HDMI audio support for TI81XX EVM
    < > SoC Audio for the Texas Instruments OMAP chips
    <*> Build all ASoC CODEC drivers

  • Hello Anoop,

    The configuration of Alsa driver is good point.

    I check in Audio user guide for J5Eco, see the sequence for enabling Audio features:

    To enable/disable audio support, start the Linux Kernel Configuration tool:
    Select SoC Audio for TI81XX chip as shown here:
    --- ALSA for SoC audio support
    <*> SoC Audio for the TI81XX chip
    <*> SoC Audio support for TI81XX EVM
    < > Build all ASoC CODEC drivers (NEW)

    However to enable audio driver, you must insmod some kernel modules:

    After the modules are built, the following sound related kernel modules (*.ko) will be generated
    sound/soundcore.ko
    sound/core/snd.ko
    sound/core/snd-hwdep.ko
    sound/core/snd-timer.ko
    sound/core/snd-page-alloc.ko
    sound/core/snd-pcm.ko
    sound/core/snd-rawmidi.ko
    sound/core/snd-usb-audio.ko
    sound/core/snd-usb-lib.ko
    sound/soc/snd-soc-core.ko
    sound/soc/codecs/snd-soc-tlv320aic3x.ko
    sound/soc/davinci/snd-soc-davinci.ko
    sound/soc/davinci/snd-soc-davinci-mcasp.ko
    sound/soc/davinci/snd-soc-evm.ko

    The kernel modules need to be inserted in the order listed above.

    About your I2C error, see the issue with J5ECO EVM:
    SDOCM00096890 -> On some EVM getting error "omap_i2c omap_i2c.1: timeout waiting for bus read "
    Comments: In some occasions this could be due to daughter card is not plugged in correctly to base EVM, ensure to tighten it.

    Best regards,
    Yanko
  • Hi Yanko,

    One of my colleague was able to bring up the board and play audio, using prebuilt u-boot.bin from manfred-becker@ti.com. So I wanted to verify the same with my board. So I changed my focus to u-boot. I performed the following steps to redo and confirm the steps.

    1. git clone http://arago-project.org/git/projects/u-boot-omap3.git
    2. git checkout ti81xx-master
    3. make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm distclean ti811x_evm_min_sd
    4. make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm u-boot.ti
    5. cp ./u-boot.min.sd /media/sd/BOOT/MLO
    6. No messages through console upon powerUP of the board.
    7. Apply patch for DDR on Rev E and above.
    8. patch -p1 < ./u-boot_j5eco_i2c_board_rev_v4.patch
    9. make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm distclean ti811x_evm_config_sd
    10. make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm u-boot.ti
    11. cp ./u-boot.bin /media/sd/BOOT/u-boot.bin
    12. Powerup the board, boot goes through, on running aplay, "omap_i2c omap_i2c.1: controller timed out" keep displaying on the console.

    We need to recreate the same uboot that Manfred was able to build, and then the board should work as expected.

    Patch file: u-boot_j5eco_i2c_board_rev_v4.patch

    Anoop

  • This was fixed with the patch in clock to set at 333MHz and i2c 0 patch when board rev is read from EEPROM. Now i2c works fine.

  • Anoop,

    I had suggested to apply I2C changes from u-boot_j5eco_i2c_board_rev_v4.patch in my first post in this thread.

    Please close this thread, if you already solved your problem.

    Best regards,
    Yanko
  • Yanko,
    u-boot_j5eco_i2c_board_rev_v4.patch patch was applied, this patch had 2 problems
    1. Freq was set to 400MHz
    2. i2c pin configuration was set to wrong values after reading board Rev from EEPROM.

    So Manfred Becker provided another patch which was set the DDR clock to 333MHz and restoring the i2c configuration after i2c is used to read board rev.
