Beaglebone Black video over HDMI has very slow frame updates

I am using a Beaglebone Black/Sitara processor with the HDMI output connected to a display. I am attempting to play back an HD video source of 480p and the frame update is very slow with noticeable pauses between frame updates. The OS is Linux with gstreamer-1.0 framework with standard gst plugins to decode the HD video. The example H.264 video provided with the BBB Matrix app works fine and is also a gstreamer app. However, when I switch the source to the 480p HD source the frame update is noticeably very slow.

Should I be able to playback a 480p HD video via the HDMI port with adequate frame updates? If so, would you direct me to where is that source and how to play it back?

What kernel/filesystem are you using? Are you using TI SDK? I think TI SDK kernel will be the most optimized and give you the best CPU performance for SW H264 codecs. Also, TI SDK should be using NEON accelerated H264 ffmpeg h264 codec gstreamer plugin, which will give an extra performance boost.

I think 480p might be doable with a software H264 decoder on a cortex-A8, especially if you are using the NEON accelerated. Have you done a "top" while running to see what CPU utilization is?
