How to set a password for root user in root file system?

Our product is based on DVSDK4.03 and runs embedded Linux.

The default root password is empty, which is continent for development.

However, the product is entering production stage and we want to add a password to the root user.

Is there a way to do it by manipulating the root file system or kernel build configurations?

Hi,
Use "passwd" command to set password for root.

Ex:

target# passwd root

Is there a way to do this in a script?

Because we want to have a default password for each installation.

Edited:

1) Without manual intervention: (automated)
You can create the password with one target board (i.e to the rootfs) and copy the following file in all the machines in which you want to update the passwords.

/etc/shadow

The following method require manual intervention, that means you have to enter the password for each and every machine.
2) Script

#!/bin/bash
echo "Password updating..."
echo "Enter the password"
passwd root

#Enter password manually
echo "Thank you!"
