Hi,

A redundant perhaps, yet perplexing question that still nags me. Basically the limitation of 64kB of SPI EEPROM for storing application code as noted in the bootloader app note (for the 5505 for instance), is it really the maximum possible ? Is it not possible to "fool" the DSP bootloader into downloading multiple pages of 64kB into the DSP RAM, from multiples sources of SPI EPPROM application code. Has anybody tried this before ? Basically is there really only one option if the code limit of 64kB is reached (which is not much anymore these days), that is to go to SD NAND flash etc. (which basically adds complexity and cost to existing design) ?? Hi,

I was also wondering about the same issue. The bin file made from the filter demo for c5505 ezdsp is 28 KB. I am integrating an SPI flash and RS232 interface with the ezdsp, so I will have to add code to read/write from SPI flash and UART communication, which will further increase the code size. And I plan to put the whole system on the road, powered up by battery, so I have to run standalone program from EEPROM. I cannot use RAM through CCS.

It will be helpful if someone guides how to load large boot images > 64KB

I am using a 24bit SPI EEPROM with the 5509A and 5515.

Hi,

Thanks for the auick reply. My initial intention was to boot a custom boot-loader that boots the application. However it appears that may no longer be necessary with the newer revisions. I'll look into it ...

The bootloader features for the SPI EEPROM are listed in the VC5505 Bootloader App Note, section 2.2.3. The address width is hardwired in the DSP firmware, so it is not possible to change without a device respin.

I can think of 2 possible options for you. First would be to add code to the start of your application to read additional information from the SPI EEPROM.

The second option would be to use the TMS320C5515 DSP which has a 24-bit address option giving you much bigger application memory space. The C5515 is a superset device for the VC5505 with bug fixes to the original device.

There isn't anyway to extend the memory on the VC5505 eZdsp.

If you need larger memory I would suggest using the EVM, also available from Spectrum Digital (http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/evm5505/revd/). It has a memory daughtercard option that has larger flash devices (NOR and NAND) integrated. It can also be run from battery.

If you must stay with the eZdsp form factor you should take a look at the C5515 eZdsp it has larger integrated memory. Details are available here: http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/usbstk5515/reva/

For the EVM option I mentioned above a better choice would be the C5515 EVM which has the larger flash memory integrated, so doesn't need a daughtercard. The info for that EVM is here: http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/evm5515/revb/.
