C5505: Confirm the SDXC support

Guru 24520 points

Hi TI Experts,

Please let me confirm the following question.
[Question]
Do you have the sample code which can support SDXC card for C5505?
If no, would you please tell me the 3rd party which can correspond to this request?

I think that customer needs to support the new file system such as exFAT.
Is my understanding correct?

If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards.

  • Hi Kaka-san,

As mentioned in the MMCSD controller User guide, The MMC/SD card controller provides an interface to MMC, SD and SDHC external cards. But could we know the speed and capacity the application needs ?

    Regards

     Vasanth

  • Hi Vasanth,
I know that the MMC/SD card controller which C5505 has supports up to SDHC.
I can't say for certain but I think that SDXC card is more ready availability than SDHC card now. Or they think high resolution audio system. It may be why they would like to support SDXC card.

I am not new to the field of SD card.
If you have any information for my question, please provide answer...

If insert the SDXC card to C5505 MMC/SC controller, can it read/write correctly up to maximum capacity?
** I think that the speed of writing and reading cannot support the SDXC speed, but if customer prepare the driver to read/write up to maximum capacity the SDXC card on C5505, they can do it. Is my understanding correct?

    Best regards.

  • Hi Kaka-san,

Below are some of my findings with bench testing using SDXC card. The SD card related CSL examples were used for these tests.

    1. SD card detection was successful

    2. Controller detects as the high capacity card (HC)

    3. Without using any file system (RAW format), controller performs read and write successfully.

    4. I formatted the SDXC card to NTFS instead of exFAT system ( It did not show up FAT32 format in my windows 7 PC , it showed only exFAT and NTFS), With the NTSC formatting done on SDXC card, I could run few of the ATAFS related CSL example.

With C5505 SD controller being compliant to SD spec version 2.0, and with the above bench test results, It looks SDXC card can be used for transfers up to SD spec version 2.0 specified speed and with appropriate file formats.

The above were my findings on bench with SD CSL examples, but would recommend you to perform test which are most appropriate based on your application.

    Hope this information helps.

    Regards

    Vasanth

  • Hi Vasanth,
Thank you for your kindly supports.
I could understand that if the SDXC card was formatted as NTFS, C55x could recognize and read/write.

Please let me confirm the following question.
If the file format type on SDXC card is exFAT, C55x could not read this card. Right?
And if customer need to read the exFAT file format, they need to prepare the file system on C55x.
    Is my understanding correct?

If you have any questions, please let me know.
    Best regards.

  • Hi Kaka-san,

    Below is my response.

If the file format type on SDXC card is exFAT, C55x could not read this card. Right?

    VK: Yes that’s right.

And if customer need to read the exFAT file format, they need to prepare the file system on C55x. Is my understanding correct?

VK: That’s my understanding too, but I cannot confirm as I haven’t tested, and also this cards are not supported as per the datasheet. This needs to be further verified once respective file system is created.

    Vasanth

  • Hi Vasanth,

    Thank you for your confirming.
I could understand. If I get more questions for this topics, please let me confirm them.

    Best regards.
