Is there any Timeline on new Davinci Processors?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DM388, DM385

Hi,

is there any timeline on upcoming Davinci Processors? Any rumours?

It seems that betting on this platform might be a dead  end in the near future. Where basically all competitors offer BSPs with recent kernel we are still stuck with 2.6.37. Also there is no cheap out of the box solution for 4k encoding. Ambarella for example seems to be years ahead on this aspect.

I really like that there is no MOQ issue / getting SDK access like you have with Ambarella / HiSilicon and others but the state of the SDK seems to be very bad on TI.

No recent kernel; some overengineered and bad documented APIs.

My Dream: 4k capable SOC with recent kernel support from TI :-)

  • Hi Peter,

Are you familiar with the DM385 and DM388 DaVinci processors capabilities? As it is described in the datasheet at:
    www.ti.com/.../dm388.pdf
    - DM385 and DM388 DaVinci Digital Media Processors are a highly integrated, cost-effective, low-power, programmable platform that leverages TI’s DaVinci processor technology to meet the processing needs of HD Video Conferencing - Skype endpoints, IP Netcam, Digital Signage, Media Players and Adapters, Mobile Medical Imaging, Network Projectors, Home Audio and Video Equipment, and similar devices in SD, HD, and 4K x 2K resolutions.
    - Supports sensor capture up to 4K x 2K 10-bit Bayer @ 30fps

  • For a new design as a followup to DM368, would you recommend DM385/DM388 or DM8127 ?
  • Hi Tek4,

You can choose between DM388 and DM8127/DM8148 depending on the your requirements and performance needs. All of the listed processors are in active production stated but the DM8127/DM8148 have a C674x DSP and higher performance but they more expensive.
