[AM1808] Sata 32 bits

Dears;

Am18x's datasheet says "No 64 bit addressing is supported."

Does this effect the size of the Drive?

In applying a Port Multiplier; does this effect anything?

Any link to further info would be appreciated. I am trying to figure out what is the maximum number and total size of drives I can use with am18x and so on....

thank you.

  • 1) No, this refers to our internal addressing, not drive access

    2) No, every device in the port multiplier is unique and fully addressable

    3) 15 drives, each drive 144,115,188,075,855,872 (512*2^48) bytes maximum each drive

  • thanks jeff.

    I assume for "which port multiplier can use" question; I  neet to look at L138 Forums for now.

    TI is not making any Sata Port Multiplier. Am I correct? TI makes Sata  Re-Drivers or repetitors(I think).

    I was thinking of putting two layer(Levels) of Port multiplers to drive 8 hard disks. I would love to see how I could run it driving 15 drive limit that you said!

    Any suggestions on port multiplying?

    thanks.

  • Hi,

    Not sure if TI makes Port Multipliers. I do not think so. Please check.

    Btw, you are sharing the bandwidth amongst all the ports when using a PM. Not many applications use more than 2 or 3 ports of the PM. You might want to think about your usage or at least consider determining the system requirement for your application to help you determine the right number of ports.

    Best regards, Zegeye

  • Hello Zegeye;

    there are only a few companies that make the PM; and I am cheking to see which would be compatible with am1xx.

    I am looking at the a NAS type functionality.

    These days; users damand more and more space. even though they don't use it! so the number of drives will be many; but the actual download/upload will be limited.

    I am still analyzing the alternatives. Jeff said it can handle up to 15 drive; and that is a great news!

    I would need max 8 drives/ports. that means 3 PMs. 2*(4+4) ports.

    anyway; thanks.
