DSP/BIOS 6.40.3.39 Linux installer crashes on Ubuntu 14.04 x86_64. Installer taken from here:

Does it need to be run in a specific directory or with certain permissions?

Nothing. There is just a "Segmentation Fault (core dumped)". The stack seems to be destroyed. Here is a gdb trace:

I just installed it on an Ubuntu 14.04 without any problems. I did it as a regular user and I installed it on my home directory. There was nothing special about permissions, it's just has to have the exec bit set. Can you try the following command line and see if you get any more info:
$ ./bios_setuplinux_6_40_03_39.bin --debuglevel 4 --mode text

Thanks! The install actually went through with your suggested arguments and there was no crash. I'll remember them in case a similar issue happens in the future.

That hints that the problem was related to gtk, which is a default installation mode. Anyway, I am glad you got it installed.

You are right, that must have been it. Either way the newer versions of DSP/BIOS don't have this problem, so whatever bug there was, it's already resolved somewhere.
