DM8168 Power Consumption

Hi,

we are working with the DM8168 running on a custom board. In an current project, we want to use the DM8168 only for configuring the surrounding interfaces. This is done right after the boot phase is finished. After that we would like to disable as much as possible from the DM8168 to minimize the heat production. I've tried to do that but I can't see any decreasing power consumption. I've checked the CPU usage using the "top" command. I could see a CPU usage of only 1%. So why is the DM8168 consuming the same amount of power regardless on the CPU load?

How did you try minimizing ? Did you work on turning OFF the peripheral clocks ?

thanks for the quick replay. Well in my code I've commanded out this LIB816x_video_start(...). I must admit I'm very new to this platform. I hope you can guide me how to lower the heat production.

Do you use EZSDK 05.05.02.00?

As Dwarakesh stated, you should switch off all the clocks that are active and you do not need.

You should also implement SmartReflex AVS to minimize power consumption on the voltage domains. Based on the device process, temperature, and desired performance, the SmartReflex module advises the host processor to raise or lower the core 1-V supply voltage for minimal power consumption.

DM816x devices consist of multi-core, multi-frequency hardware blocks (CPUs, DMAs, Peripherals), its important to note these blocks can be individually powered down to conserve additional power & reduce heat.

Hi Pavel,

I've tried to use the steps presented in processors.wiki.ti.com/.../TI81XX_PSP_PM_CLOCK_FRAMEWORK_User_Guide to disable some peripheral clocks. For some reason DVRRDK 03.50.00.05. Would you be so kind to help me here with more detailed steps. I'm a little lost here and don't know where to start!

Hi Pavel,

in my application I want to boot the DM1868 first, configure all the surrounding ICs, FPGAs. After that, the DM8168 is not needed anymore. If possible I would like to shut it down completely so that it doesn't draw any current at all since the enclosure gets very hot instead. After searching the web a bit I figured out that a way would be to disable the peripheral clocks. If there is any easy way to just shout down the DM8168?

Mathias,

You can use software to power off, in Linux, use the "poweroff" Linux command/utility.

You can also test with "sleep", "halt" and "shutdown" commands.

Hi Pavel,

I've tried all of the commands you suggested. Unfortunately none of them brought the desired effect of lowering the power consuption. It seems like I have to disable the clocks. Do you see any other way of doing it quick and easy. I would need to do this for an initial test.
