Motion Detection Using MV/SAD information from H.264 Encoder in DM365



Dear All,

I am implementing Motion Detection using MV/SAD information from H.264 encoder in DM365

But the correlation MV/SAD for Motion Detection has not strong relation.

It has so many fault for the motion detection.

In the security world, the motion detection is very important. But I think the accuracy is very poor from the MV/SAD.

If I can get the sum of deference without motion estimation instead of SAD for motion detection, I think it is more suitable method.

If anyone has idea for nice accuracy motion detection, please let me know.

    Is your intention to detect the actual motion in the video sequence or to detect if motion has occurred in a video frame?

    If it is to detect if motion has occurred in a video frame then using motion vector information in the MV/SAD information will be a reliable way for detection.

    You can add the absolute value of all motion vectors in both X and Y directions separately and then find an average absolute motion vector. This average absolute motion vector can be compared to thresholds to detect if motion has occurred. If no motion has happened then average absolute motion vector will be very small. However, when motion occurs then the average absolute motion vector will be larger.

    For more accurate estimation you might want to calculate the average absolute motion vector for different regions of the video frame separately and check each against thresholds.

    I will describe the SAD sample list for this image and I move the red pen for secound table.

    But I can not distinguish the corelation of the motion posion and the SAD Values.

  • Dear YongKil,

    The SAD value that is written out in the MV/SAD data is the SAD after motion estimation. When motion estimation works well the SAD values will not be high for macroblocks in motion. Hence it is not surprising that SAD and motion do not have good correlation.

    Hence, you should NOT use SAD values to detect motion instead use the motion vectors information to detect motion (as mentioned in my previous post).

    Bye the way, I will report my test result for getting comment from you. 

    I tested for tow no motion image. First one is complicated image and second is simple image.

    And I investigate the sum of absolute MV [ SAM = abs(MVx) + abs(MVy) ].

    And I confirm your comment as followed for complicated image.

    But I cannot get the same motion vector value for simple image.

    Do you have any idea for remove the large motion vector value for the no motion image?

    do you have further comments on why YongKil's simple image seems to have a large average SAM for the simple image and why the individual SAMs seem to be much more noisy for the simple image, than they are for the complicated image? Is this just an artifact of how our ME works for a simple image vs a complicated image and is to be expected?

    How can one best set a reasonable threshold for motion detection, if the SAMs vary that much from a simple image to a complicated image?

    Now I am using MV for motion detection function. But I cannot overcome the false alarm of motion detection yet.

    The values of SAM are larger for a simple image compared to complicated images because in the simple image during ME search it will find many macroblocks which give good prediction and one of these gets selected as the motion vector for a macroblock. Hence the motion vectors for still simple video sequences tends to be larger than for still complex video sequences.

    One way to solve the false detect would be adaptively change the threshold for motion detection depending on complexity of the video frame. The complexity can be typically identified by the size of I pictures. Low complexity I pictures will produce lesser bits while high complexity I pictures will produce more bits.

    Another technique would be to adaptively change the threshold for motion detection depending on SAM values. If the SAM value is small the threshold for motion detection should be kept small while the threshold should be increased if the SAM is larger.
