The 720P video quality issues on DM355

I use APPRO DM355 IPNC to develop an IP camera from last year, but Now I find that the quality of 720P video stream is rather bad compared to my competitor who use Ambarella design, that means the video stream of my IP camera(and the APPRO IPNC) looks very blur compared to its competitor under same test environment(same lens and same scene).

I want to kown what is the main reason to make the video looks so blur, the sensor and VPFE configuration or the MEPG4 codec(I use the ffdshow on my PC as the MPEG4 decoder). Is there any space to me to enhance the video quality from the APPRO design. And does the video qulity have been improved on DM365 and DM368?

Compared to Ambarella design, what is the advantage of TI design(The 720P video stream bitrate from Ambarella design is just 2M bps)?

I provide a piece of image captured from the 720P video stream of my IP camera and the Ambarella design as following:

  • There can be many sources to determine the quality including Lens, Sensor, ISP, ISP tuning, Codec, System noise and etc. Therefore it is difficult to say with limited information.

If we focus on Codec, then DM355 supports MPEG4 and MJPG, and DM36x has H.264, MPEG4 and MJPG. As H.264 provides better compression compare to MPEG4. DM36x provides better performance. TI also provide codec based on ROI (Region of Interest) and the overall visual exprience can be even better.

About ISP, DM355 has 4th generation and DM36x has 5th generation. DM36x ISP has more advanced functions.

For detail, please contact local TI office.

One quick way to test is to increase the bit rate of the codec in DM355 IPNC and see its effect on the blurness and image quality. If it is still not as per expectations then as Sang Yong said, there are other parameters in the pipeline which have to be tuned first. You will also need to check if the codec configuration is in the best performance mode or in the best quality mode.

  • OK,Thank you for your kindly reply!

Because the two IPNC is under same test environment and use same lens,so I think the ISP and MEPG4 codec should be the main reason for the blurness.I have set the bitrate as 4M and use the codec configurion as Appro provided.so the bitrate is not the reason for the poor quality.I also check the MEPG4 Encoder Codec document but I can't find any useful information to enhance the video quality. Can you give me any tips on this fact? Thank you very much in advance!

In the ISP pipe line, I also tried to diable all the Filter that may blur the image quality((I just care about de the definition of the video at this piont).but no matter how I do the quality of video stream displayed on my computer is just as the D1 video from another IP camera. I think there are some key points I didn't capture to enhance the quality, anyone can help me?

We will use DM368 do develop a 1080P IPC, but we don't did the video quality issues have been solved on the DM36x?Can TI give us some confifence?

    Thank you!

  • For ISP support, please contact TI local office. It needs NDA to get detail ISP information.

    I am sorry for inconvenience.

  • Pavel,

It is hard to compare TI and another chip as you don't know what lens and sensor is used.

Second,  Ambarella uses H.264 and DM355 is only MPEG-4, so you may want to compare with DM368 that is more similar to the Ambarella A2 chip.

However, in my experience Ambarella has better quality than TI.  When I get competition from a camera that is using Ambarella, I never try to compete on quality. Instead I push video management bundle and a lower camera price.

    Hope this helps.

  • I'd like to inform that DM365 ISP can provide the best quality.

ISP in DM36x recognized one of the best confirmed in both DSC (competing extreme quality on top of good input data) and Phone Cam (competing generating good quality by removing all the artifacts of cheap small lens/sensor module), and this is the key differentiation part of talented customers.

I can say that we provide the way to get fish vs. other vendors provide good size fish. Depending on customer's effort / knowledge,  customers can get great size fish or small size fish. We provide tuning tool and it helps most of customers can get good size fish w/o big effort.

    Anders,

Historically, this used to be the case. but TI has made quantum jump in Video Compression efficiency through the patented Smart Codec Technology and Platinum Codecs. These are available for download with the DM36x / DMVAx Reference Designs at www.ti.com/ipcamera. Please contact your local TI office for more details, especially for DMOS scores from Tektronix PQA500 that provides an objective method to compare the perceived compression quality offered by TI solutions against competitiors'. TI offers the best in class video compression efficiency (video quality) and would be glad to help you realize that in your product.

  • Great!

Do you have a link to images or video clips, or data on DMOS scores comparing with Ambarella?

    Thanks,
