EMIF tools for AM5728: DDR memory frequency

I am using the AM5728 EMIF tools spreadsheet to generate an EMIF configuration for two 256x4x8 banks DDR3L modules.

Under 'system application details' there is a parameter entitled "DDR Memory Frequency".

The EMIF tools guidance states: "This value should be selected for the desired DDR clock frequency."

Can you provide further guidance as to how this value is arrived at? How is it related to the "Speed Bin: Data Rate" parameter?

Can you provide an example of both of these parameters for the Micron MT41K256M16TW-107 module used within the AM5728 EVM?

Hi Tom,

The memory you refer to:
does NOT comply with Table 8-4. Compatible JEDEC DDR3 Devices (Per Interface) from AM5728 Data Manual. The MT41K256M16TW-107 device works on 933MHz DDR clock frequency, and the max compatible with AM5728 is 533MHz. You can use max DDR1600.

As for your question about relationship between Speed Bin: Data Rate & DDR clock frequency. Lets suppose you have DDR3 1600:
DDR3 I/O bus clock frequency is 800MHz
DDR3 Data Rate is 1600MT/s

This is where my confusion lies, as this is the module listed on the BOM for the AM5728 GP EVM. A similar module, the MT41K256M16TW-125 is used on the Industrial Developer Kit.

Can you advise how these modules are able to be used?

Hi Tom,

I glanced at what is listed in AM572x GP EVM BOM file (www.ti.com/.../getliterature.tsp

As you can see in the Qty field, next to the number of the DDR part 113, the Micron chips MT41K256M16TW-107 are 0, while the Kingston D2516EC4BXGGB chips are 4. So in AM572x GP EVM the D2516EC4BXGGB DDR3L is used, which is DDR3 1600. This is confirmed by the Hardware User Guide as well: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/AM572x_General_Purpose_EVM_HW_User_Guide#2GB_DDR3L

I agree that adding 0 count of the MT41K256M16TW-107 part is confusing, but in fact the board comply with the DDR requirements listed in the Data Manual.

I just checked the IDK board, indeed this uses MT41K256M16HA-125, see the Hardware User Guide: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sprui64a/sprui64a.pdf

And as per Micron website: https://www.micron.com/parts/dram/ddr3-sdram/mt41k256m16ha-125 in the specs tab, this DDR has the following parameters:

Density

4Gb

Width

x16

Clock Rate

800 MHz

Data Rate

DDR3-1600

Which also complies with the DM recommendation for max DDR3-1600. The only limitation will be the clock rate, on IDK this DDR chip will run at 533MHz, not its maximum frequency 800MHz
