If there is no boot image that takes control over the PMIC, after a certain time it stops the power to the AM572x SoC.
If you want to overcome this, you should populate J5, or in the older revisions of AM572x GP EVM, you should swap R23 with R28 .
NOTE: As Paul suggested have a look at the Hardware user guide first.
