How to run Arm application on Montavista?

Hi there, I am trying to understand how to run applications on the arm core of OMAP-L138.

I have an eval OMAP-L138 LCDK with the Montavista and I would like to know, how can I run some application .

Hi Mitesh,
If you would like to run the ARM code on your OMAPL138 LCDK board then you should boot Montavista based Linux OS on your board and cross compile your application and execute it.

In host Linux PC:
host-Linux-pc $ arm_v5t_le-gcc hello.c -o hello_out

In OMAPL138 board:
montavista-arm-taret # ./hello_out

Hi Shankari, thanks for your rply.
I managed to get the HelloWorld example running on the OMAP-L138.
However, I was trying to boot OMAP-L138 LCDK from NFS and followed the following wiki.
processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Creating_a_Root_File_System_for_Linux_on_OMAP35x

but it seems to broken it now. Could you tell me what should be the default bootargs value so that I can get it boot as factory settings. Thanks/.

Found it ;)
bootargs=console=ttyS2,115200n8 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rw rootwait ip=off

I changed ip=off to ip=dhcp

Hi Mitesh,

I presume that you setup the TFTP server in your PC.

askubuntu.com/.../how-do-i-install-and-run-a-tftp-server

Untar/Copy the OMAPL138 filesystem into "/usr/local/filesystem_omapl138" folder of your Linux host PC and do the following commands in u-boot.
And put the uImage (kernel) into "tftpboot" directory of your Linux PC.

The below commands get the kernel image from 'tftpboot' directory and mount the filesystem in '/usr/local/filesystem_omapl138' folder.

Ex:
u-boot# setenv serverip 10.100.1.94
u-boot# setenv ipaddr 10.100.1.9
u-boot# setenv bootcmd 'tftpboot 0xC0700000 uImage;bootm 0xC0700000'
u-boot# setenv bootargs mem=32M console=/dev/ttyS2,115200 ip=dhcp nfsroot=10.100.1.94:/usr/local/filesystem_omapl138 root=/dev/nfs rw rootwait
u-boot# saveenv
u-boot# boot

PS: Change the IP address and server IP as per your N/W env.

Please let me know if any issues.

should the bootcmd be just uImage ? or should it be the full uImage*.bin ?

You have to give which file you put into tftpboot directory.
if you have file name called "uImage" then use "uImage" and if you have "uImage.bin" then use "uImage.bin"

You would get a "File not found error" when you do tftp boot.

Log seems to me , you didn't setup the TFTP server correctly, please do make sure.

If you did the following command and able to get the file from tftpboot directory then your TFTP server setup is good, if not you need to setup the correctly.

linux-PC$ touch /tftpboot/test.txt
linux-PC$ echo "Hello world" > /tftpboot/test.txt
linux-PC$ tftp <your PC IP address>
linux-PC$ tftp 192.168.1.2 (Example)
linux-PC$ tftp> get test.txt
linux-PC$ cat test.txt

Hi Shankari,

there were few problems with the commands...

1) The file name in /tftpboot/uImage was not uImage! it was uImage-omapl138-lcdk.bin

2) the u-boot env bootargs value for console=/dev/ttyS2 should have been console=/dev/ttyUSB0

To verify that the ARM is boot linux from linux host can I removed the SD card and reboot?

Hi Mitesh,
You can name it anything, when you rebuild the kernel, you would get "uImage" that's why I mentioned like that (also as a example)
Default, "ttyS2" should use as LCDK board has the console port in UART2.
If you want to get the console from "USB" port then you can connect "USB to Serial" converter and get the console on it.

Yes, remove the SD card and check, also you can identify from the boot log, is it using rootfs from NFS or SD card.

Hi Shankari,

Yeah, thats true. I had to copy u-boot_omapl138.bin to uImage in /tftpboot/ I guess it was created when running the setup script, provided with the MCSDK.

And about the ttyS2, yeah your are right.

Lastly, when I tried to remove the SD card and reboot the lcdk it didn't work. It just doesn't reboot without SD card.

And for some reason, I am not able to use my Linux host machine any more. It just keeps restarting. (Doesn't restart completely but keeps locking the screen and closing all the apps)

Hi Mitesh,
Please try to configure the other Linux machine or VirtualBOX to setup the Linux host and setup the NFS for NFS booting.

Hi Shankari, I have install Ubuntu 16.4 on VM ware player and starting to download the MCSDK again..
Did you say for OMAP L138 the latest MCSDK is 1.1.0.2 ?
to install on Ubuntu 16.4 I will have to make some changes right?? could you please let me know again.. Thanks.

Hi Mitesh,
Yes, MCSDK is 01.01.00.02 is the latest SDK for OMAPL138.

I have not tried to install the MCSDKin Ubuntu 16.04 but Ubuntu 14.04 and it worked.
I hope you able to install in Ubuntu16.04 as well.

I am manged to get the MCSDK 1.01.00.02 on Ubuntu 16.4

I also got the tftp server running and I can see the LCDK booting up from the targerFS... (from linux host )

But It looks like I will have to have the u-boot in the Nand flash for it to work..

could you please tell me how can I rebuild u-boot or how can I flash default u-boot if provided with the mcsdk. thanks.

Hi Mitesh,
You can flash the u-boot.ais file into NAND using SFH tool, you should convert the u-boot-omapl138-lcdk.bin to AIS format using AISgen tool.

Thanks Shankari, now back to the original question.

I would like to install or run web server from the arm processor (ARM core on the OMAPL138)

should I install PHP and Apache on the Target Linux or Host Linux PC?

Or do I need to have a cross compiler similar to arago-linux-gnueabi -gcc ?
