High-speed Differential signal routing (Microstrip vs stripline)

Hi All,

Recently I came across the application note: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/spraar7f/spraar7f.pdf

I have seen a guideline regarding routing high speed differential pairs on microstrip is more preferable than stripline.

Does anybody knows reason behind this. How microstrip is better than stripline?

Hi,

In the context of which device (and interface) are you asking? You MUST follow the device guidelines (in the related app notes & data manual), when you design your pcb.

How microstrip is better than stripline?

In general microstrip is cheaper to manufacture & takes less layers. When using stripline because of the second ground plane, the strip widths are much narrower for a given impedance and board thickness than for microstrip.

From the application note shared.
Yes the microstrip has advantage of cost and access for troubleshooting.
But at the same time, stripline has advantage of better EMI performance which seems priority for high speed differential signals.
