DM6446 - VPFE Frame Resolution Support for ITU656

Hi,

This is regarding ITU656 - resolution support. I was able to find couple of discussions on forum on the subject, but am not  clear as they are conflicting .

We plan to interface a progressive Aptina cmos sensor with DM6446 VPFE. The sensor supports the ITU656 format of data transfer and will be configured for a resolution of 1024x768 (XGA).

- I understand from the ITU656 standard that it is applicable only to NTSC/PAL resolutions. Hence i assume we cannot use this format to transfer data of XGA resolution to the VPFE. Hence we will need to use the RAW RGB (bayer) mode. The following discussion i think indicates the same:

http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/99/t/6409.aspx

- But i also found another discussion, which indicates that it is possible to transfer data of resolution 1280x1024 in ITU656 mode.

Can anyone please clarify? Any help will be highly appericated.

Thanks,

satya

  • In my understanding, XGA format is not supported by ITU656. So I even don't know how the input stream is coded.

Could you specify the data format from the sensor?

If it is Raw data then you need to use Raw mode and if it is YUV data (from SOC sensor) then you can use YUV mode (using "INPMOD" setting).

  • Hi Sang-Yong,

    Thanks for the reply.

The sensor can be configured to output data in either,

    Bayer RGB, or

    - Various RGB formats such as RGB555, RGB565, RGB444 (we understand these are not supported by the DM6446 VPFE), or

    - ITU656

The sensor does not output data in YCrCb format.

We hence are left with only two compatible formats of data transfer - Bayer RGB or ITU656.

We are assuming, as you have also indicated, ITU656 is not compatible with XGA, hence choosing to use the RGB Bayer mode. We are hence pretty clear on using the Bayer RGB mode.

The confusion is because one of the discussion seems to mention that it is possible to use ITU656 for resolutions greater than NTSC/PAL.

    Thanks,

    Satya

  • If it uses the same Header/Tail information, then I think we can support XGA.

Let me check it to our design owner and get back to you.
