AM4372: Simultaneous 5MP camera sensors

Hello,

I had a question regarding whether the AM437X product line is capable of running two 5MP sensors at the same. Looking at the reference design TMDXEVM437x , I see that dual 2MP sensors are possible but I wanted to check what the limitations were on the dual camera inputs.

Also if dual 5MP camera sensors are possible, can it be done on the while AM437X range or just one of them?

AM437x supports 8 bit or 10 bit capture and max pixel clock supported is 75MHz. In 8 bit mode, the driver supports BT656 in YUYV or UYVY mode.

If bringing the camera input in YUYV mode, that makes the input size as 2 bytes/pixel, so for 5 MP camera in YUV interleaved format, it will be 10 mega bytes per frame. With 75 MHz pixel clock, you can only capture 5MP at around 6 fps, leaving margin for horizontal and vertical blanking.

In RAW capture mode, 12 fps can be possible but then AM57x doesn't have hardware accelerator to do RAW to YUV/RGB conversion and ARM won't have enough bandwidth to do the conversion in software.

I don't fully understand the difference between the 8 bit and 10 bit mode, but would it be possible to utilize the 10 bit mode for higher frame rates?

Hi Oscar,

I would like to add that while the VPFE driver only accepts YUV 422 input, the hardware IP as such doesn't have this constrain and hence if the camera can send YUV 420 data, supported frame rate will be doubled to around 12 fps.
