Help, My PMP needs and update! (re-posted from DSP)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP

(November 15, 2009 - 08:34:22am)

Hello,

I am a PMP user and I have a couple Coby 4320s.(similar to the MemUp - Orizon) The units have several bugs and  I want to backup/update the bios and repair some bad registers. I have had no luck with the services of coby, and they are very negative to anybody with these units. As far as they are concerned; they no longer support the PMP or the DaVinci line.

(I am well aware of the EOL for some things, but ***'on...its only 36months old and I love what the TiDSP can do...it was a good idea in 2005, and since 2006; i spent over a grand on popular PMPs with Ti DSPs and MPUs...in hopes that the promised fun and support showed.)

Since 2007; I have looked for update information on the early/popular Davinci DSP (TMS320DM270) and all the devices it went into. Much to my surprise; the SoC and most things made with it; have been 'snuffed' underground to an almost non-existant presence.

Now, I am forced to ask;

Is there a win98/2k software or driver to help me backup/download my bios and flash on these PMP units without using the JTAG port; but using the USB port?

Is there is a "seed" file or something i can place on the hard drive's root to help me get a dump or copy of the OS in place?

Does anybody know what Coby used as an OS on these units?

I use win98/2k/xp, and have no access to expensive test equipment or high-end ide software. A simple flash or dsp utility would be nice, but if it takes a JTAGjet w/ccs 1x/2x (cheap), lets talk...

Much Thanx in advance...

  • Unfortunately this is not really the kind of question that this forum could help you with, the DM270 you mention is not a widely supported part, you will only find it in these sort of high volume consumer electronics applications, which is why there is not much in the way of public documentation on the part. You would be best off asking Coby directly or a more consumer based forum for this type of inquiry, though it is quite possible that no one can really help you with this.

There are two main issues, the first being that Coby developed the software and hardware they are using on the PMP, TI only provides the silicon so in general we don't know about their specific implementation. Second any information that TI would have on the PMP is going to be under NDA, we cannot share engineering information obtained from customers with other customers.

This being said, there is not much I could do to help, since the DM270 was not a publicly supported part there was never any collateral for it that I could even point you to.

  • I understand, thank you. Its been a couple years since i began looking for help on my own, but none came from Coby. I would really like to see the support, but i'm afraid he nolonger exsists. Many have left the US, and a letter from China is all i have. The chief designer for Coby told me a year or so ago that; they don't have anything on the PMPs, and no one knows anything about them. As far as they were concerned, they are open-season! I do understand the concepts behind the original idea of the PMP; and I hope maybe an open source could be used, if not, then I guess i will need a J-jet and ccs to make my own...but i really would like some input and help for the 3.x plugins (if still around).

Have a great year, and thanx again for your reply...

  • I am curious why you have such interest in this particular PMP? If you are willing to go to the lengths of using CCS to hack into the board than you might be more interested in an open source board like the Beagle Board which has all the source software widely available and is still relatively low cost.

  • sorry for the delay...lost password...

well i guess the real reason is that; i have waited 20 years for a working DivX Portable and the 4x3 screen is perfect. Plus i spent hundreds on the commercial (finnshed) versions. I have 3 DaVinci (270) PMPs and each of them has a register error for the LCD and few other quirks but i love the units.

For nearly 20 years I have spent my free time converting my favorite videos and movies into DivX format just to watch them on my (2006/2007) portable movie player. I can't say how bad I want all that work to pay off, but i can tell ya that; i have loved the idea of a (pocket sized) PMP for many years, and when i seen the Ti chips in the Coby units; it 'purdy much sold me.

Now as for that Beagle Board...it seems that I would have to play 'fabricator' and construct a portable housing and such; before using the thing productively. I am truley blown away at the abilities that thing has, and wish to learn more later....thanx for the link!

I seen the use of the PiCO or whatever and it is still available...thats great to know. Last year I wished to get one, and they told me to come back, but I didnt get back in time. I would love to put that little wonder to the test this year.
