TMS320C5535: Clarification on C55x differences

Part Number: TMS320C5535

Hi All,

I'm working on a music synthesizer project that will need a proper hardware DSP. After some research, I believe that the TI C5000 series meets my demands for computational power and cost. Furthermore, the C55x eZdsp development boards seem like a great option for my developments needs (USB powered, onboard emulator, audio in/out, io peripherals etc.). The eZdsp boards that would be viable for this project are the:

  1. C5505 eZdsp USB Stick Development Tool ($49)
  2. C5535 eZdsp USB Stick Development Tool ($99)

While the boards aren't that comparable because the C5535 eZdsp has many more onboard peripherals than the C5505. I'm not sure if I understand the differences between the TMS320C5505 and the TMS320C5535. Going through the device specs the main differences I can find are:

  • Difference in LDOs (which won't matter with the eZdsp boards, correct?)
  • The 5505 has an EMIF
  • Difference in max clock speed
  • Price per unit
  • Power consumption

Obviously the devices do have different intended applications otherwise TI wouldn't make two different parts. If I had to guess the C5505 is meant for higher computation power and data bandwidth and the C5535 is meant for lower power applications. However, I'm still not sure I fully understand the criteria for picking between the two of them. So, with all that said here is what I could use some clarification on:

  1. First off, am I misunderstanding the difference between the intended applications for the 5505 and 5535?
  2. What is the benefit of having 3 vs 1 onboard LDO in practice?
  3. What applications would require the use of an EMIF? Would the C5505 eZdsp allow the use of the EMIF through the breakout connector?

I know that is a lot of questions and I hope they make sense. Let me know if you have some insight!

Thanks in advance,

Evan
