TMS320C6424: Replacing C6421 with C6424

Part Number: TMS320C6424
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6421

Hi,

I have a board wich mounts the TMS320C6421ZWTQ5.

This component is not available. I would like to check whether I can use the TMS320C6424WTQ5. I don't want to modify the software.

They seems to be pin to pin. The latter has a 32 bit DDR2 SDRAM interface while the fist has a 16bit DDR2 SDRAM interface. For sure the upper DDR lines are not terminated.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

I've not examined in details the datasheets of TMS320C6421ZWTQ5 & TMS320C6424WTQ5, but they indeed seem to be pin compatible. You should double check this before you replace the processor.

    As for your concern:
The latter has a 32 bit DDR2 SDRAM interface while the fist has a 16bit DDR2 SDRAM interface. For sure the upper DDR lines are not terminated.

See what has been stated in the Implementing DDR2 PCB Layout on the TMS320C6421/4 DMSoC Application Report (www.ti.com/.../spraal7c.pdf), section 1.3.7 DDR2 Signal Termination:

"No terminations of any kind are required in order to meet signal integrity and overshoot requirements. Serial terminators are permitted, if desired, to reduce EMI risk; however, serial terminations are the only type permitted."

So, when you make sure that devices are pin-to-pin compatible, I think you shouldn't have a problem using TMS320C6424WTQ5, without the need of changing the software.

    Best Regards,
    Yordan
