Linux/AM5718: No print out on SD card start booting

Part Number: AM5718
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDXIDK5718

Tool/software: Linux

Hi Ti Experts,

I am a fresh developer for the TI device,  I have a problem how to boot the Linux from SD card with AM571x Industrial Development Kit (TMDXIDK5718).

As your office SD card create link:

processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Processor_SDK_Linux_Creating_a_SD_Card_with_Windows

I download the am57xx-evm-linux-03.02.00.05.img.zip image, and use the Win32 Disk Imager to write the image into SD card. I can see the uboot in the SD card when I open the SD card with my PC.

Then I plug into  the SD card to board, and power on , I have connected the PC with the board with serial cable, but I can get any output with my minicom terminal.

The serial setting with :  Bps/par/Bits  115200  8 N 1.

My questions is how to boot up the board and print out the message with a serial cable? It seems not for me for this moment.

Many Thanks!

Nemo

  • Hi,

You should have MLO & u-boot.img files on your boot partition of the sdk. I use the create-sdcard.sh script, you can inspect it & see if your sd card is configured the same way.

After that, I am not sure what com port should be on windows, but on linux I set:

    sudo minicom -D /dev/ttyUSB0
with the configurations as described in your post.

    Best Regards,
    Yordan
  • Dear Yordan,

Many thanks for your feedback. When I changed another board, it was working on /dev/ttyUSB1.

I am fresh for this boot field. If I want to use my own making image , what process should I to do? Do you have some links or documents?

    Best Regards,

    Nemo

  • Hi Nemo,

You can use the toplevel make file, located in ~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05. Use the bellow steps:

    To build u-boot.img & MLO:
    cd ~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05
    x0155517@mms:~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05$ make u-boot_clean
    x0155517@mms:~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05$ make u-boot

To build linux kernel you can use either:
    cd ~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05
    x0155517@mms:~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05$ make linux_clean
    x0155517@mms:~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05$ make linux

    OR
    cd ~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05
    export ARCH=arm
    export PATH=~/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am57xx-evm-03.02.00.05/linux-devkit/sysroots/x86_64-arago-linux/usr/bin:$PATH
    export CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf-
    cd board-support/linux-4.4.32+gitAUTOINC+adde2ca9f8-gadde2ca9f8/
    make tisdk_am57xx-evm_defconfig
make -j4 //this builds kernel image & dtb file, which you should copy in rootfs/boot of your sd card.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
    Yorda
  • Dear Yorda,

Thanks a lot! I can build the image for my board now. I am working on a project which will use dsp to calculate the camera video data, but I am fresh for this board, how does the ARM connect DSP.
For example, I can build the DSP code with a binary .out file by CCS IDE, but how it communicate to ARM (rt linux based) ?
Can you give some guileless or where can I get the links or documents about this topic?
    Many thanks!

    Nemo
