AM5728: Single PMIC for multiple CPUs

Part Number: AM5728
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS659037

Dear Team,

We are working on a automation production design which requires 4-AM57xx CPUs on a given PCB, Its difficult to imagine 4 PMIC for 4CPUs that is one for each, is there a way we can design using a single PMIC for providing all the required voltages to CPU and interfaces available. This will reduce our design complexity and BOM cost. We are okay to cut down the I2C communication between CPU and PMIC.

We prefer to run Linux kernel with minimal FS in performance mode, we do not consider the Frequency or Voltage scaling of the CPU for power optimizations.

Please give your inputs.

Thanks & Regards,

Vamshi G.

  • Hi,

What you want to achieve is impossible. Even discarding all other issues, a single PMIC cannot satisfy the power (current) requirements of 4 processors.
  • Hi Biser,

True, Single PMIC cannot satisfy the power requirements, I am looking for replacement of the PMIC with other solutions like standard DC-DC voltage regulators. Please let me know if we can replace PMIC with DC-DC voltage regulators.

What would be its impact on software BSP support in u-boot/kernel, that is a solution without PMIC.

    Regards,
    Vamshi G.
  • Section 8.1 of the AM572x Datasheet SR2.0 Rev. B clearly states:

"TPS659037 is the Power Management IC (PMIC) that should be used for the Device designs. TI requires use of this PMIC for the following reasons:
    • TI has validated its use with the Device
    • Board level margins including transient response and output accuracy are analyzed and optimized for the entire system
    • Support for power sequencing requirements (refer to Section 5.9 Power Supply Sequences)
    • Support for Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS) Class 0 requirements, including TI provided software"

There are no other power solutions for this device at present.
