Hi

In the manual "AM571x Industrial Development Kit (IDK) Evaluation Module (EVM) Hardware User's Guide (SPRUI97).pdf"
a configuration is provided to use alls six Ethernet Ports (four from PRU modules and two from the GBit Ethernet Switch.

When I try to setup this configuration within the Pinux Tool (actual could version 4.0.1483) I always get pin conflicts.
I only manage to either have four PRU Ethernet Ports and no Ethernet Ports from the switch or only two PRU Ethernet Ports
when forcing to use the GBit Switch (regardsless if I use RGMII, RMII or MII configuration).

I have tried this for the AM5718 and AM5728 processor.

Is this a PinMux fault or is there no way to use all six ethernet ports simulteneously? (in which case the IDK user's guide would be wrong).

Hello Markus,

This is a known issue introduced with PMT v4.0.1483. Our release next month will have it resolved.

If you aren't using VIP, you may download v4.0.1482 from here and use that version until the next release. Please review the release notes and known issues here.

When using v4.0.1482 - the PRU alt mux register exports 0x20000000 when it should be 0x10000000. (refer to the bottom of boardPadDelayInit.c)

I tried you suggested version v4.0.1482 and I still fail to use all six ethernet ports.

I created a new PinMux configuration for AM5726_SR2.0 and only added PRUSS1_MDIO, PRUSS1_MII, PRUSS2_MDIO, PRUSS2_MII.
This already makes it impossible to use GMAC_SW0 and GMAC_SW1 ethernet ports.
See attached screenshot.

Hi Markus,

Oh yes, additional information - the 6-port use case is only possible on the AM571x devices. As you've found on AM572x, you will have to chose between PRU MII or the GMAC.

In the meantime I checked the AM572x (SR2.0) data manual (sprs953b).
Some signals essential for PRU1 Ethernet and EMAC Ethernet are only available at one single pin.
So it is definitely not possible to use all six Ethernet ports.

Then I also checked the data manual of AM5718 SR2.0 (sprs957d).
Here it is also not possible.

The PinMux tool in version 4.0.1482 however does allow this combination for a AM5718 setup (but processor is marked as beta).
So this must be an error in this version.

Hi Markus,

It is a bit confusing because this is only on AM571x - there is a PRU internal mux to place PRU's MII signals on the PRU's GPI/O pins. That is how we achieve the 6-port config on AM571x. The PinMux tool will set the SoC's Control Module register values to configure PRU GPI/O signals. The Control Module is what chooses the mux modes at the SoC level. Another level of muxing is required to configure the PRU to drive PRU MII signals on the PRU GPI/O pins. This second level of muxing is controlled by the PRU's GPCFG register. This is what I meant earlier by the PinMux Tool bug - it exports 0x20000000 to the GPCFG register when it should be 0x10000000.

Please take a look at the SPRUHZ7 Technical Reference Manual: "Section 30.2.1 - PRU-ICSS I/O Interface". It describes the "internal wrapper" that allows extended pin muxing.

The AM5718 Industrial Development Kit ships by default with the 6-port configuration enabled.

Do you know why it is not implemented in the AM572x devices?

Sorry I don't have an answer for why this was done. The two devices are not the same silicon so there definitely are specific tweaks to each. Take a look at Section 3 of the AM572x/1x compatibility guide SPRABX8 for peripheral-by-peripheral differences.

Just adding the reason why....AM572x was developed before AM571x and when we were working on the business cases for the single core, we saw an opportunity for 6 ports coming from leading customers :)
