what's the different between omap35x and DM644x?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAP3530

I have compare OMAP35x and DM644x. both of them are dual-core, and same DSP core C64x+, and even OMAP35x has a Cortex-A8 ARM core, it seems that OMAP 35x has better performance than DM644x, am I understanding right? OMAP35x can also works well in video processing, but what's the advantage of DM644x.

  • OMAP3 has a higher performance ARM.  DM644x has a higher performance DSP.

A couple other differentiators for OMAP3 are the graphics accelerator and the availability of package-on-package (PoP).

  • Hi, Brad

Thanks for your reply, another question, as you said DM644x has higher performance DSP than OMAP3, but what's the difference that make there DSP performance different? the number of pipeline? or the frequency?

  • Up to 520 MHz 64x+ core on OMAP3530 (i.e. with the 720 MHz Cortex A8).  Up to 600 MHz DSP core on DM6446 with the 300 MHz ARM9.  FYI, the DM6467 was the follow-on device to DM6446.  We just issued a new variation of that device called DM6467T which is available with a 1 GHz DSP and 500 MHz ARM9.

  • Thank you Brad!

So is that mean the difference is only the frequency of DSP core?
I thought there should be some special component in DM6446's DSP core, that could make it works better when processing video signal. so there DSP core is the same but the frequency, right?

  • same DSP core (64x+), but DM6446 has a video co-processor (VICP) which gives it a little extra horsepower when doing video encode/decode.  Also as Brad already pointed out, DM6446 has an ARM9, while OMAP35x has a cortex-A8 (4x perfomance of ARM9).  In addition, OMAP35x Cortex-A8 has NEON coprocessor and graphics core.  So this is not a straight apples to apples comparison...

If you need lots of application GUI performance, OMAP35x with Cortex A8 is a great choice, if you need higher video processing or other DSP-related performance and can sacrifice some of the more demanding GUI requirements that may be too much for ARM9 to handle, then our DaVinci line may offer some great alternatives....including the 1GHz DM6467T which Brad mentioned.
