AM3351: 1Gbit Ethernet support

Part Number: AM3351

Hi,

In the AM335X datasheet I see the following snippet:

1G Ethernet is still supported by the CPU correct?

Another follow up question, per Functional Block Diagram is show RGMII mode which does 1GB Ethernet.

Section 7.6 on the EMAC: “ MII mode is supported with the remaining GMII signals.”  What about RGMII mode?

Regards,

David

  • The native PHY interface inside AM335x is GMII. The GMII interface was not provided due to the large pin count. Three options are provided to the pins, MII, RMII, and RGMI. The MII option is simply a subset of RGMII but only supports 10/100.  The other two interface options are provided through circuits that convert GMII to RMII or RGMII. These interface options support Gig Ethernet.

The Ethernet MAC documentation primarily references the native interface, GMII. This note was added to make it clear the GMII signals associated with Gig Ethernet are not available. The only GMII signals made available to the user is the lower order data bits defined by MII. Therefore, Gig Ethernet is only provided by selecting the RMII or RGMII option.
