TMS320DM648: Why no Colour Bars or similar simple video output example

The 6437 has a simple wee colour bars example, but thois depends upon setting the VPBE up to do this. Processors that are targetted at video often have hardware facilities to do this e.g. the DCU (display controller unit) on the Freescale Spectrum, Rainbow & Vybrid processors with which I am familiar.  I presumed that the  TI 320DM648 would have a similar block, but it doesn't. So how to I generate a video output, just to prove that the back end hardware is all working? I can't find a suitable app note.
