Communication link between DM6437 EVM and Cyclone II FPGA

Hi,

We are currently looking at the communication possibilities between the DM6437 EVM board and Cyclone II FPGA. TI's VLYNQ seems to be the best solution for us, since it has a low pincount, is fast enough and has good examples and templates on the DSP side. But on the FPGA (Altera) side it is almost totally undocumented, and there are absolutely no example-code out there. Anyone that can help here? If we cant get it to work on the FPGA, theres no point in VLYNQ communication.

HI,

I don't know about Altera, but in Xilinx fpga VLYNQ exists like IP ( go to http://www.xilinx.com/products/ipcenter/DO-DI-VLYNQ.htm ). Developing an IP Vlynq from the scratch is not a simple work. I think that a more simple way to communicate with DSP is using HPI port (from fpga it is seen like an asynchronous memory).

Thanks for the answer, but I think HPI takes up too many pins, and in the end, makes everything more complicated then it should be. Surely there must be someone out there who has successfully interfaced a DSP with a FPGA using VLYNQ.

Why not go for an EMIF communication. It is simple, fast enough and easy to implement.

Besides EMIF speeds upto 50to 100 MHz are suported by almost all DSP processors.

We looked into the VLYNQ solution for a Xilinx-based project but went for another solution since the available FPGA IP was too expensive (in terms of FPGA size) when put in relation to the rather modest bandwidth.
