TMS320VC5416: Cheaper Emulator Tool for programming

Hello,

I need to program TMS320VC5416PGE160 and I was adviced to use the emulator XDS510PLUS together with Code composer studio.

However I just need to program the DSP and not debugging it. Could you please give me some recommendations on how to program this DSP without buying that emulator? Is there a cheaper version?

Please take a look at the Blackhawk USB100v2 store.blackhawk-dsp.com/12196.html
Also if possible, please take a try to work with some of the newer C5000 DSPs (C5515, 17, 35, 45) which are better supported compared to the older C5416.

Fax is supporting me for the emulator choice, so I dediced to join directly to the forum discussion ;-)

I took a look at Blackhawk product, but I cant find any target list in order to check if my DSP is really supported.

However, I see that XDS100V3 ( www.spectrumdigital.com/.../ ) supports "C54xx" series , and XDS200 ( www.spectrumdigital.com/.../ ) also supports C5000 series.
My DSP is a "VC54": do you think it's compatible anyway?

By looking at this link: http://www.spectrumdigital.com/jtag-emulators/ I do see that the emulator USB100v2 is suitbale for C54XX and C55xx products and the device I am using is a TMS320VC5416. Is there any difference between VC54 and C54? May I use USB100v2 also for my device? And last question may I also use the emulator XDS200 for TMS320VC5416?

I really don't know the answer to your questions.
I have looped in a colleague who should be able to help. The VC5416 is a pretty old device.

Hello guys,

I bought an Olimex XDS100V3 emulator and I'm trying to connect to my DSP using Code Composer Studio 7 and TI Emulation Package 7.0.48.0.

Unfortunately, I can't see TMS320VC54 in the device list. If I choose TMS320VC55, I get this error:

"Error connecting to the target (Error 1063 @ 0x0)

Device ID is not recognized or is not supported by the driver. Confirm device and debug probe configuration is correct, or update device driver (Emulation Package 7.0.48.0)".

Any ideas? Should I buy the expensive XDS510Plus?

Hi Alfredo,

According to this thread, the latest version of CCS that supported C54x is CCSv5.5. Buying a better emulator will not add support for C54x to CCSv7. I believe the on board emulator is equivalent to XDS510 anyway. It's definitely not supported in CCS6.1, which I have installed.

I suggest you download CCS5.5 from here. The good news is that licensing is now free even for older CCS versions.

Dear Mark, thank you for your precious answer.

I roughly assumed that the latest version of CCS mantained the compatibility to all older versions, but i realize that it's not true.

I'm going to try with CCS 5.5 and I'll let you know..
