decode demos: isn't mpeg-4 same as .264 ?

MPEG-4 is commonly used to refer to MPEG-4 part 2, h.264 is technically the same as MPEG-4 part 10 (more commonly referred to as just h.264).  Therefore from a video evolution codec perspective, you normally hear about MPEG-2, proceeded by MPEG-4 (part 2), followed by h.264 (aka mpeg4 part 10), with each providing better compression (smaller file) the the previous generation...

So, should the h.264 Viddecoder provided with the evm 6467 demodvsdk be able to decode mpeg 4(part 2) files as well ?

Is there a way for me to get the decode demos (which accept only .264 ext) to run with mp4 files ? <I tried simply renaming them with .264 ext but that did not quite work>.

I just checked codec availability for DM6467 (see inventory tab) at www.ti.com/dms

since mpeg4 decode codec is not available for dm6467, you will need to do the mpeg4 to h.264 conversion in software before attempting to decode it with DM6467 (FYI, you cannot simply change file extensions as they are different compression standards).

Optionally, you can try contacting one of our Authorized Service Providers such as Inginient as they often have codecs that are not offered directly by TI.  If you look at the MPEG-4 Decoder from Inginient at the link below, it suggests it supports DM6467 http://www.ingenient.com/video_codecs.html

FYI, the .mp4 extension is most likely referring to the container format, not the video stream.  Here are a couple good articles from wikipedia:

In order to understand the container format you would need another layer of software.  This support is provided by gstreamer (open source project).  TI has a plugin to work with gstreamer.  You would need to get that running if you wished to play any standard mp4 files.
