Hi,

We are evaluating the combination of C2000 (motion) and Sitara AM335x as the industrial communications slave for multiple protocols. The actual concept is the following:

C2000: Motion controller, SPI communications with Sitara using a "generic protocol"

Sitara: PRU with EtherCAT/PROFINET/Ethernet/IP firmware, ARM with the corresponding slave stack and translation to the SPI "generic protocol".

Some of your documents suggest to develop the application on the Sitara, which is not suitable for this case. Also, in some other documents, it is suggested to run the stack on the C2000 (which would only be usable using the AMIC110 emulating ET1100). We are afraid of obtaining poor performance with the approach detailed above (latency may be too high?).

Have you had any experiences with architectures like the one shown above? Any recommendations or IT engineers we could talk to?

Hi,

What do you mean by "run the stack on the C2000"? Do you mean the Industrial communications slave stack (EtherCAT, etc.)?

Yes, just use the sitara as an ET1100 (AMIC110) and run the stack on the C2000 (similar to this www.ti.com/.../tidm-delfino-ethercat). However, this only leaves us with the EtherCAT protocol. This is why we are evaluating the possibility to run the stacks on Sitara ARM processor and create a "generic" abstraction (which would talk to C2000 using SPI).

Hi Gerald

We are developing an EtherCATdrive example ET1100 Emulation using an AMIC110 and a Delfino communicating over SPI . The Delfino will support the stack. This will be available shortly. For other protocols we are currently planning to run the stack on the AMIC110.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know when will this example be available?

Also, are there any plans for examples of other protocols running on the Sitara side, but "translating" over SPI to a C2000? Has this approach ever been considered? What I see is that for motion C2000 is the chip to go, but there is no clear way on how this attaches to the protocols running on Sitara. Would it be possible to have a technical call with your Engineering team?

A preliminary release is still a month or more away. This is the first element of a packaged set of combined releases. We have created demonstrations at SPS and one or two customers have developed solutions using our Industrial communications elements and a C2000 communicating via a SPI interface. This was done previously with the Sitara being the SPI master because of software availability but with the current software the Delfino could be the SPI master .
